I want to eliminate using vacuum from the block of my engine to run the wipers/washers... Where can I get a 12 volt electric vacuum pump for my needs? Is there a certain amount of suction PSI required. I have seen vacuum pumps on ebay, but I have no clue as to what I really need.. I imagine that it would have to continually run. Unless I rig a switch somehow and turn it on when I need the wipers/washers. Thanks for all help! EQ waynerolloff@hushmail.com
I bet that question does not come up often now since cars of a viintage that have vacuum wipers are no longer driven much in the rain. Your post brings back a lot of old memories of riding in 1940-1950 era cars whose wipers slowed to a crawl or even stopped while going up hills.
Hahahaha Totally understood about not riding in the rain. But there is that slight chance that I may get caught in it one day. Apparently my nailhead gets it's supply of vacuum from the intake manifold and what appears to be a secondary vacuum pump connected to the oil pump..???? One line runs from the intake. And another from the lower side of the block (oil pump). The line that runs to the oil pump on the side of the block and runs to the wipers is blowing oil rather than sucking, which leads me to believe that the diaphram is shot. I can't seem to find any kind of a kit to repair the diaphram so I blocked that part off. Now the only source of vacuum is from the intake. And the vacuum needed to run the wipers/washers is stealing from the performance of the car... Arrrrgghhh! What a delemma
You lead me to a kit to rebuild the oil pump with the vacuum assist on a nailhead 364 c.i. and I would be indebted to you for life.... The intake manifold vacuum on it's own is not enough to handle it. There has to be a rebuilding kit available somewhere..
Any chance this it the name of the item needed? NOS 1942484 09.198 $ 93.25 REAPIR KIT, S.T.V. 1958 THRU 1961 ALL. FOR SUCTION THROTTLING VALVE www.oldbuickparts.com
That vacuum should be coming from the fuel pump, I believe. :Smarty: I don't know what year, make or model you have, but I'm pretty sure that on my '53 Buick Special, '57 Ford Skyliner and '57 Olds the vacuum comes from the "dual action" fuel pump......pushes fuel and sucks air. Anyway, I would either get a rebuilt fuel pump or get a kit and rebuild it yourself. I assume that you've checked all the vacuum lines for leaks. I think that the intermittent tempo of the old vacuum wipers is way cool :bglasses: and part of making the 50's rides so enjoyable. My 2 cents....
check with summit racing. hotrodders with high compression engines, install auxiliary vacuum pumps just for their engines or for power brakes.
I'd forgotten about vacuum wipersou: Passing was always fun. Look hard to pass, foot down on the gas, half way thru the pass, foot off the gas (wipe, wipe, wipe) look hard again, foot back on the gas. Whew made it.:Brow: Bruce
Hi there, Go to www.newportwipers.com they make an electric wiper conversion thats really coool:bglasses: Bolts right on the existing mounts where the old vacume wipers were. :TU: Good luck with the project:beer Bill
Two years were off of the fuel pump and two years were off the oil pump. The oil pump onese were a vacuum pump piggy backed to the oil pump. It is a vane type pump on an eccentric. There is no diagphram. It is probably heavily worn. Surprise... TA Performance has the materials and equipment to completely re-build the pump, but it does require removing the oil pump from the engine.
On my old 56 I just bypassed the aux vacuum pump. went diretly from the manifold to the wiper motor. Eliminated a lot of vacuun leaks or possible ones and on the rare ocassion I got caught in the rain worked fine. Also eliminated the wide / narrow feature which uses vacuum controlls too. Probably eliminated more vacuum leaks and not really needed. I have seen those electric conversion deals and they look like slick idea too.
