Q jet>>>>>> please read

Discussion in 'The Venerable Q-Jet' started by TerrifyingToro, Jun 29, 2005.

  1. Think I'll try posting this here since some of you guys are pretty sharp on the old Qjets.

The topic is the black/brown plastic insert thingy that goes in the bowl.

I recently read somewhere that you can grind part of this thing off for improved bowl volume, I liked that idea.

I've also been told you can just toss the thing (same reason).

I've read that if you leave 'em out it will screw up fuel distribution.

I've always put 'em back in and I think I've rebuilt a couple of hundred Qjets in the last 30 years with out problems, sooooooo what do you all think. Anybody have any experience with this? I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

    All feedback appreciated....... :bglasses:

It's in there to control fuel sloshing.

I don't think it'd be a good idea to leave it out, but you might gain some volume by cutting, but then - how much, and why? Seems way easier to just make sure your pump can provide the right volume and pressure.

Actually, you are right except for the part about leaving it out to gain volume. Rochester put the device in to reduce stalling during heavy braking, which would cause fuel to slosh forward, flooding the engine with the ensuing fuel delivery. If there is a fuel volume issue, I suggest seeking parts which will allow quicker bowl filling. These parts are available from the Carb Shop, and are recommended for the higher powered engines. There are also floats available which will permit maximizing fuel control for turns, acceleration, hill climbing etc. They have a different shape, depending on the purpose, to control fuel volume delivered under special circumstances.
