I was thinking of going as well but I'll have to leave my Buick in the parking lot as it's got 2 doors too many.
I like to stage as shallow as humanly possible. It gives you a little more of a running start when you get the light, and although it may not seem like much of a difference in distance, it really does make a difference. 60ft. is better, ET is better. It does require leaving a bit earlier on the last yellow so more practice on reaction time is necessary but it's worth it.
Thanks John, can't hurt to try it. Bill - I stage shallow too, and leave as soon as I see the last yellow come on (on a sportsman tree) - I can generally pull a 0.1xx light, I was told a long time ago decent competetive light starts with 0.0xx - I can pull that off about one in ten times..I've got to work on getting ahead of the last yellow by a split second (at least with this car) Havent gotten consistant yet. I totally suck at the pro trees the FAST and Supercar guys use..just saying.
Hey Rhett,a way you might be able to get away with(cheat) adjusting your pinion angle is by moving the rear of the trans up or down with the trans mount thickness(might have to fab a solid one to do this, not sure how much travel you'd need). Anyway, you want the pigs nose to point down 1 1/2 - 2 degrees down in relation to the transmissions plain. So even if the pigs nose is pointing up from level about 1 degree say,if the rear of the trans is shimmed up so its 2 1/2 - 3 degrees in the back, that would give you your 1 1/2-2 degree down angle. This is suppose to make the suspension actuate so the tires press down on the pavement when you launch, improving traction. This was the only way I could think of to adjust the pinion angle while mantaining the non-adjustable stock setup. I don't think I seen anything in the rules that says you can't do this either.(what they don't know won't penalize you,LOL) I don't know if it will work, what do the suspension gurus out there think???
One thing you may be interested in is the suspension class they will be having soon at the old readers digest given by one of the premier chassis guy in the area. I believe it's in the next few weeks & you need to be registered. A small cost for the amount of info received. Best part is you can bring your car up the next day to do some of the suggestions mentioned. Class is on Sat. & car work Sunday. Tom T.
Tom - In Pleasantville? 300 SBB - thats great info, I've always wondered how to mess with fixed pinion angle..although I have to be honest I think I'm at the point where I need more HP to worry about suspension. If the track is good, I can mash it from 1700 RPM on street radials with only a "squonk" from the rear and the car just goes with a 2.10 60 foot. I always considered anything less than that bias ply territory..or drag radial. Can I expect more on 215 Silvertowns? BTW - I'm having this conversation like the car runs well - I changed the idle channel restrictions in the carb and now for some reason it totally loads up until warm, and when hot it chugs against the converter that doesnt seem to have hi stall, and it loses line pressure when the fluid gets hot and kicks in and out of gear..I'll get all these things sorted out but I have to laugh when I'm talking like I'm ready to knock .1 off my 60 fts..!!!!
Off exit 4 on 684. Chapaqua, where Hillary lives. I'll go if you go. Always looking to further the knowledge base. I would have to close shop for that day though.
I haven't had my 64' with the 401 and ST400 to the track, but if I had to guess, the better gearing would do about a 1.7 - 1.8 60 ft time,if I got traction. Mine has a vacuum secondary 750 Holley, that runs very well on it.
Doc's favorite combination! Thats quick, and as Tom will point out, the lower 1st gear with the TH400 could make for a tricky launch. Tom! I'm from Pleasantville, so Readers Digest will always be the big building off the Saw Mill for me! I'd love to go, and would love to join you... but the car's not ready to run down there yet and I have to be selective about the time I take off this year if I want to make Michigan. .... Is this the guy that the Northeast GS club brings in? I've heard great things about his seminar. Hopefully this is not the last time he comes around...
Tom - now that the car is squared away, maybe I can make this after all...do you have dates and how much, etc..?
