Pros and cons of a 9 inch?

Discussion in 'Got gears?' started by Jess, Dec 26, 2004.

    Jess Meaner than POOP!!

Well I have a 9 inch in my posi that I got from this board.
here is the build on it-
    Moser 31 spline axels w/ 4 3/4 bearing
    New bearings/studs
New nodular case with Mark Williams pinion and MW heavy duty yoke
New Auburn limited slip with 4.11 ratio
New set 3 1/16 carrier bearings
Wilwood Brake kit (big bearing Ford) with parking brake kit
Hard plumbed from distribution block (modified stock block + mount) and Earls flex hose to the hardline on the frame.
Fully boxed lower arms (Poston)drilled for sway bar + sway bar.
Adjustable upper arms (two mount points + adjustable to tweak pinion angle)
    Stock type lower/upper arm connector.~

So in print its a v ery nice piece, but the posi has never seemed to function quite like I have had hoped, and was considering a change. I am looking at a DETROIT LOCKER/SPOOL/MINI SPOOL.
I have heard so many people say a spool on the street is and will break your rear end, but I have yet to see that happen, so that is why I am considering it. I know Eaton is supposed to be one of the best, but also one of the most expensive. Spool, gears and shim kit is less than a eaton, so I have found so far.
So I need some serious advice, I need some pros and cons from people who know what they are talking about, not some speculations, please..

I really appreciate the help I am given, but please do not fill this thread with guessing, some facts of people who know and or somewhere I can find info in a book or on the net, would be great..
    thanks..

    detroit locker

ive had a 9 inch in my 72 skylark since 1991. it has a detroit locker in it that has required NO attention in 13 years, 60k+ street miles and at least 300 drag strip passes. car is heavy-3965 before my fat butt gets in, and runs low 13s at about 104-currently has 2000 stall converter but has had a 3000 stall converter for several years. I use bfg drag radials wnd the ydon not spin at all, nor does the locker ever ratchet(slip) except once in a great while making a very tight turn. I recomend the detroit locker over anything else available.

Ran a detroit locker in Alan's green car on the street and at the track at low 11's and 120 mph. I was told that it would not hold up. I never had a problem with it. When I prestage I build up the RPM's a little and then stage. It will lock up and be fine. If you do not lock it up before taking off on a hard launch it will brake your neck and then the locker. Always build up the R's and then launch and it will be fine. Some times on the street when you take off at an intersection and then turn hard right it will lock up and make the inside tire chirp. It is best to let off and coast through the hard turns and use hard compound tires on the street.

I am building a 9" with a spool but it will see very little street use.

    Jess,

Good to see the rearend is still around!

On a side note - how's the suspension/handling/launching/braking with the setup. I've always wondered.... PM me if you like!

Do you think that the Auburn LS was affected by having the internal assembly sitting in one position with lubricant "soaking" into it before the axels actually turned when I sold it to you?

for what it's worth - the guys that originally built it initially recommended a detroit locker for it...

No I do not think that sitting is/did cause it any harm.. launching/braking/staging could not be better in my eyes..
I ran a 12.35@111 on street tires with a stock converter. it lifts and the car hooks really well...I have yet to run slicks, I honestly feel that the transfer is so good, street tires and I am getting really close...lol
