Just purchased a 1972 Skylark......The power windows were working very very slowly. After a minute or so, all of the windows stopped working. I checked the 40 amp fuse and it's still good. Top does work.
I would think there must be a relay someplace. Anyone know what the problem is and how do you repair???

    Thanks

No relays that I know of on these cars. There are two self reseting breakers under the dash one hot at all times for power seats and one hot Key on only for windows. Check battery voltage first then make sure you have good grounds. A broken wire on the drivers door switch will make every thing work screwy. Hold the switch on and Wiggle the rubber boot in the door jamb. If the window takes off look for A bad wire inside the boot from 35 years of flexing every time the door moves. The wire can break inside the insulation and be a bear to find.
Hope this helps and they are not stuck down with rain in the forecast:Dou: 100 miles from home Good luck... John

Coming off the 40 amp circuit breaker...not a fuse, you should have a orange/black wire that goes to the power window junction block. My chassis manual says it should be on the lower drivers side area. You should also have a pink wire leading up to the power window junction block also.

From the power window junction block the orange/black wire, and the pink wire, as well as a Red/White wire should go to a 3 prong power window relay. Pink will be the 12 volts to feed the coil part of the relay.

Make sure that the outer part of the relay has a good ground. I would suspect that the relay has gone south, ie bad contacts, and as I said above, make sure the outer case of the relay is grounded. Hope this helps you out. :TU:

Thanks Steve. I checked the wires and I noticed that the 3 prong junction box wasn't plugged into anything. I connected the male 3 prong to a female connector just hanging there. The female wires were red blue and brown. I didn't see any relay. Still no luck. ?????

    Steve,

P.S. The pink wire is taped together with the orange/black wire. I should take the bundle apart and see what I have. There's some plastic plug in there also.

    Thanks again

    Steve,

P.P.S. The taped bundle was nothing. Just a plug with the two wires taped to it.

    Oh well.

I don't have power windows so I'm going off of what's in my 72 chassis manual. I seem to think George has something on his web site about installing power windows, that might help you. Here's the link.

There IS a power window relay behind the drivers kick panel near the front.

Thanks.....I think my problem is the wire harness.
