A member here sent me this pic a year or two ago while I was considering new tire sizes. The blue is stunning & I haven't forgotten about it.:TU: I should know who sent it but memory is drawing a blank. Can the owner of this car post here or send me a PM please ? I'd like to ask a few questions on the colour.
That would be '72 Buick Stratomist Blue. Best color ever, of course I'm a little bit biased...........
Dean, Have to agree with you. Colour sure makes a difference. Now I have to make a budget for a complete change to blue/black interior.
Paint cost will vary greatly, especially with a color change seeing that all the jambs have to be done and inside the fenders etc... But a while back I priced out a interior color change, and found that $1500 would be good to budget.
Curtis, Thanks for the budget number. Biggest thing holding me back right now is having to remove the brand new NOS vinyl top.
if you want to keep the top you can dye it to a matching color....on my 39 ford street rod i wanted the fender welting to match the paint job and a local auto body supply store mixed up a quart of matching dye to the exact paint code.....that car has been on the road since 1992 and the dyed welting still looks good
My dad painted/dyed the vinyl top on a mid 90's Fifth Avenue my mom was driving for a while, it held up nicely even in the Newfoundland winters
That color was used on 70 Rivs first then on 71 GS and Skylarks so not just a 72 color. Olds used it and caled in Viking Blue, Pontiac used it on Trans Ams and called in Lucerne Blue. Was porbbaly the most used color on a 71 GS
Color change to Stratomist Blue (SCO paint code 26..1970) is easy. Remove vinyl roof and thoroughly prep car for a solid color paint change. All interior metal parts paint proper color black(s). Easy with interior removed. Want a white or black interior? Even easier....carpet and package tray have to be black for both, easy to dye. Seats, door panels and headliner need to be black or white. That should be all needed for a Stratomist Blue color change. Nice color indeed! This '70 (455) was an SCO car.
to dye the roof i would have a body shop supply mix up a pint or quart and spray it with a paint gun rather than a rattle can, and as in the case of my street rod they can match the dye to the paint......one thing though this is an item where everyone is quick on advice get the manufacturers recomendation to how to apply.....i was trained by SEM and they have multiple steps when dying vinyl.....the first step is to wash the panel with bot a water based cleaner and a solvent based cleaner, this is to remove any protectants that were applied some are water based and some are solvent and you have to use like cleaners to remove them.......next they have a product which when applied makes the vinyl sticky and opens the pores for better adhesion.....then you apply the color......this is one manufacturers recomendation with whatever system you use got by the manufacturers recomendation not by a buddys recomendation.....i have dyed full interiors and a couple tops following SEMS steps for their products with excellent results, i have watched others try to do the same without the proper prep and have a disaster......also the cost of the of the products will not break the bank
I would not do it. There is nothing wrong with what you have. Maye you need another Buick and with the price dropping everyday you should be able to find a blue one soon
