Also, fellas I'm totally new to this whole posi rearend thing, so can you tell what is the gear ratio and is this considered a 10 bolt or 12 bolt? Also does this operation consists of replacing the whole rear end or is it gutting my rear end (no pun intended) :puzzled: and replacing it with the new posi stuff?

    It's a 12 bolt...

If you want to buy just the carrier, and have it installed, it would be a good idea to find someone in the business to do it for you. Of course, the easiest thing to do, is find a complete good rear and swap it in....but that doesn't happen most of the time.

Searching for a '71+ 9 3/8 BUICK posi, will also need to know what ratio of rearend one has & if a posi is located, which ratio of carrier it is.

The '71+ BUICK 9 3/8's with 2.73's, 2.93's & 3.23's took the mid ratio carrier, & the 3.42's took the low ratio carrier.
There was even a high ratio carrier which will be fited with 2.56's. Have cut housing ends off several 9 3/8 rears that had the 2.56's... really doggy ratio.

    Got Posi?

Which gear ratio would be the best application for my situation?

With 22" rims, what will the tire profile be? If the entire wheel/tire combo will be no taller than the stock combo, then a set of 3.23's are nice for all around driving. 3.42's you will pay the highest price for....2.93's are not as desireable, but are still not cheap, when you find them. Your stock 2.73 gears will do, but the 3.23's a more fun!

If you're running 22 inch rims it sounds like you will be running a much taller wheel size then the standard, so you would need lower gears (higher number 3.23 > 3.42 ) to compensate for the size difference. The car will be geared taller (lower number) because of the larger wheel size, it will make it a nice highway cruiser with the larger wheels, but slower off the line.

    Example:

Standard wheel size, engine turning 2000 rpm's at 70 mph with 2.73 gears

Larger wheel size, engine turning 1600 rpm's at 70 mph with 2.73 gears

because it takes the larger wheel longer to make one rotation in comparison to
the standard wheel, thus making the engine having oly to rev at 1600 rpm's

How are the carriers dimensioned differently to fit the different ratios? You would think the ring gear would just exchange, but I guess not?

Hello fellas I need the the car to be quick and able to plant that power off the line, with the 22 inch rims. Which one do I need, and what type of performance with I get with my standard rearend? I just know that with the posi it'll get me two tires planted instead of one.
