I just got a new set of double cut bits from carbidebur.com. In no time at all, it walked right thru into a water jacket.:stmad: I was trying to blend an area where two casting lines came together. The hole is about 5/16". It's in the exhaust port next to the valve guide. Can this be welded or saved? (my luck isn't too good right now:ball: )

Don't know if it can be saved. A good freind of mine ports heads for AMP.Sometimes he welds on the heads, depending on what he's doing with the head. I don't know how hard a hole in the water jacket would be to weld up. He preheats the head, the either gas or mig welds. He then slow cools the head.

is this an iorn or aluminum head?

It's a cast iron head. I normally wouldn't be concerned, but these are '70 casting small valve heads with 19,000 miles. I've had this motor for 10+ years. I'd hate to think that I ruined it.

That is going to be very difficult, if not impossible to fix, especially since it is on the exhaust side and into water.
I have on occasion been able to successfully weld on the exhaust side and then use ceramic epoxy to withstand the heat, but I think your best bet would be to get another head. Jim Burek P.A.E. ENTERPRISES

    Hi Guys,

Reynold......Give Indy Head Service a call. A buddy of mine has used them numerous times for his Ford 2.3L iron race heads. I've seen their work and it is EXCELLENT in that area, several completely welded and re-done combustion chambers from valve heads snapping and going into water jackets and in the exhaust ports into water areas! They are on the expensive side but can fix it if you want to spend the money. On the other hand like Jim says....you'll probably be better off locating a new head and going from there.

    Hope this helps.....:)

I'll probably can that head. I have another set of '70 castings. I'll just have one left over. Kinda like buying a pair of shoes and having a good one left over from an old pair.:Dou: If I can liquidate a couple of things around the house, I'm definately going Stg 2 SE's.

there is a process called cast welding, where metal is sprayed onto the repair via a oxy/acetalene torch to build the material back up. there is a school called CAST WELDING TECHNOLOGIES 1-800-449-1849, they may be able to recommend someone in your area, good luck.

Ihave that process available in the shop right now, I have usd to to do some repairs on cast iron heads.
Ihave not tried it on a water leak into the exhaust port yet.
One concern with repairing it would be how accessible the area needing repair is. Jim Burek

Here is the offending damage. It was where two parting lines in the cast came together and formed a nasty pocket. I thought I could blend it outward, but I guess these new bits eat faster than I thought.

:eek2: Wow that is not good! I doubt it would be worth the cost of trying to save, especially if it dosn't work and you have to scrap it anyhow. Good Luck! Brian

I may keep it and use it as a test peice. I've already polished the chambers in it. :af: I've got another set. I've also found a '68 Wildcat convertible with a 430. The guy wanted $800 for it but it looks like they tried doing body work(I guess that's what you'd call it)and the car's in primer. Been sitting in an old building for many years. Top is rotten. I may wait to see if the price drops and try to grab the drive train mainly for the heads.
