Pontiac rear axle in my Buick??

Discussion in 'Got gears?' started by gsnewman, Jan 1, 2012.

I posted this question this morning in the wrong forum....I'm still a new guy.

I'm sure everyone will tell me to wait for monzaz to answer my question, but I'm throwing it out there for all to see and respond to:

Just bought a 70 GS 455. Trying to ID the rear axle ratio. Looks like a Pontiac to me, as the part number cast into the housing is 9799100. Additionally, the 2-letter code that I uncovered on the pass. side axle tube [the forward-facing side] is WB.

My research tells me that it's a non-posi Pontiac rear with 2.56 gears.

Does anyone know what the part number should be that is cast into the rear axle of a 1970 Buick GS 455?

Also, can the rear end that my car now has have a posi added to it, or am I better off to find an 8.5 rear end, and build it? I know how George from Buickperformance.com feels about this.....

I am really trying to stay original, as I plan on restoring the vehicle in the not-too-distant future, so I suppose I should try to find an original 1970 8.2 rear end that either has factory posi in it, or one that could have an Eaton or an Auburn put into it.

Feel free to give me any thoughts or opinions, as well as answering the question regarding the part numbers.

Thanks much, and Happy New Year to all.
