I don't have a 64 anymore, since I sold mine a few years ago, but I went ahead and answered anyways, since I know the new owner isn't a member of this board. There wasn't a choice for "perfect" or The nicest you have ever seen" so I went with very good. Ex. car - 64 Skylark with 23k original miles, unrestored.
Condition choices I figured if you have a perfect steering wheel than it is very good with no cracks. If it is not perfect and no cracks than it would be fair condition no cracks and if it is not cracked that much than it would be fair condition and some cracks and if it is really cracked than it would be bad condition mega cracks. Thank you, Jerseysky66 (Bob)
Guys, I checked into making these a few years back when I had my 66 GS, but figured no one would buy them for the price I would have to ask. Duane
I knew someone would ask, I would have to check, but I think they would have sold for $275 each. Now that was back around 95, so with the price of molds/plastics today they would probably be in the $375-$400 range. This was with me re-using the old hubs and injecting the new plastic around it, like I do with the GSX wheels. I could check into seeing what it would cost to have the hubs machined to make new wheels, but there probably isn't enough demand for these wheels even though there doesn't seem to be any decent ones for sale. I would also need an NOS one to use for the mold, and a few cracked originals to take apart to determine what the internal skeleton looks like. Duane
Would this be a simulated wood wheel? P.S. Duane, thanks for the info that you sent me (both times)...:TU:
Mike, No these wheels are hard plastic and match the interior color of the car. The centers are dished out and the horn button fits inside this area. Actually they look pretty nice when new, but generally are prone to cracking. Decent ones are very hard to find and generally need repaired anyway. They were hard to find 10 years ago and were expensive then. Glad to help with the info. Duane PS. If there was enough interest I would make these wheels. Again, I would require the use of an NOS wheel to make the mold, but it would be returned to the owner completely unharmed.
Give it some time I know there is more than 13 owners of 64-66 GS/Skylarkso No: If you do have one of these cars please take part in this poll:blast: What about the Special/or Wagon does it have the same steering wheel?? Thanks, Jerseysky66 (Bob):beer
Sorry to jump in on you 64-66 guys but I would like to know if the '68 3 spoke simulated wood wheel is being reproduced. Does anyone know? They were used on Chevy's so it would be hard to believe that they are not being made. I just have not seen them. o No:
Bob- Try searching in the member list for 64 - 66 owners... Also check out this thread: http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=183593&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1 I would love to see this get started...
64/66 WHEELS Duane, I would have one or two bad wheels you could take apart, and I would donate to the project. I have a 65 and 66 in need of original wheels. I have resorted to using a late model sport wheel on the 65 and a wood 68 on the 66. I would be interested in at least one if the project flies. Bill Sangster.
There is an NOS wheel on E-bay right now. I have found two NOS ones over the years--one is in my '64 and the other in my '66. I still need one for my '65 GS and would gladly buy one of the repos if you get them made. I have about 8, mega cracked cores laying in my attic I would donate for the cause.
$$$$$$$!!!!! I'm sorry but I couldn't pay that much for a new wheel. I would first have to try one of the wheel resto kits out there first. Has anyone ever tried these? I think Eastwood and por-15 have them.
I tried the repair putty and it looked good for about a year, and that was on a car that spend 360 out of 365 days sitting in the garage. After that, the putty started to separate from the plastic on the steering wheel because the plastic used to make those wheels continues to shrink. What can be done though is to use that putty to repair a wheel to look perfect, then use that as the wheel to make the mold for a new one. I would be glad to take one of the cores I have and repair it in that way and donate it to be used to make the mold. It will take me some time, but when I am done it will be right. I have a steering wheel that is in relatively good shape that I keep stored in the house that could be used for this.
Can I add to the Poll ??? Does anyone know if I can add to the poll??? I guess I should have put a spot for Non Original wheel and maybe a spot for non original wanting original wheel. Jerseysky66 (Bob)
