Tim has himself a 72 eldorado that is a sweet ride . The tranny had been starting to shift wierd,, almos6t like it was slipping . To top it off i hit a pot hole coming home from the beach and put a dent in the t pan . I felt really bad about this but no worries cause it needs a filter cause it isn't shifting quite right. So we changed oil & filter to day & it still acts the same.,put it in drive goes into gear great reverse the same .It will shift into 2 & 3 but only when under heavy load ie passing gear let off the throotle and it falls out of gear except 1&r .The oil looks really pink & smelt good. The linkage seems all good but there is one thing , there are 2 pipes that go out of the rear of the tranny valve body & up into the tranny. One of these the bottom one i can move back & forth in the valve body , could this be the problem ? Any help or ideas please !!!! Later Bake

First thing to check is the kickdown switch and next the kickdown solenoid inside the tranny pan. For the first test, disconnect the kickdown switch and see what happens. I had a Buick years ago that had the kickdown switch stuck in passing gear that acted much the same.

thanks my friend so this is the wire that comes from the outside of the case where the power is fed in ? Also with the kickdown wire dis connected will the tranny act normal ? Bear with me please trannys are mystery stuff, i just don't think the trannys gone the oil didn't back this up . Iwill give this a try thanks alot . Is this tranny similar to the th400 ? It should be the wire that hooks to the connector that sticks out from the side of the transmission. I've never messed with an Eldo, but I suspect they operate about the same as a TH400. With the wire disconnected it should be just like normal driving but with no kickdown.

I'm pretty sure the Eldo has a vacuum modulator. Check the hoses on both ends. While the hose is off the bottom let it sit & see if any trans. fluid comes out. If it does the modulator is N/G.

this may sound stupid but could the problem be in this loose pipe ? threr is no sign of a nut holding it in place so maybe it needs a tap to set it in to place . just a thought

The trans SHOULD be a th425.

When you say it falls out of gear is it actually free wheeling like in neutral?

When you put it in drive it goes into 1st no problem & drives away nicely to get into any other gear you basically have to floor it so passing gear kicks in .After the tranny shifts & you back off the gas it will drop back into 1st ,sometimes it feels like its sort of grabbing if that makes sense . I went to the hot rodding forum you told me about and got some useful info ,check out my thread there if you wish and see what you think . By the way skipsey the carb works great & does your wife like her new shoes ? Later Bake
