Plastic window cracked

Discussion in 'The ragtop shop' started by jonfredrickson@, Apr 29, 2011.

  1. I have a 69 buick gs 400 conv. The black plastic window is all cracked. Is there glass replacement? What is the best way to replace the window? Or am I all set to just buy a new top?

Can I assume that you meant to write back instead of black?

To answer the question. The original window should have been glass. The inexpensive replacement tops have the plastic window. A high quality top will have a glass "backlight". The backlight is the part fo the top that contains the material that the glass does into and the glass as well.

There are may threads in this section about where to by a proper convertible top and componants as well.

It would seem that most top kits have the plastic curtain (or the glass backlight) laminated to the inner curtain, they can not be replaced separately. Looking at my top, I would think you'd probably have to take the whole thing apart to get to it, so it might be easier to get a new top put on if yours in rough shape.

I had a '73 Olds conv for 26 years. I put 2 tops on it. Each time I had to replace the back light with a new glass. And, it had rear defogger (mounted on the glass), add another $120.00.

Depending on the condition of the top, your ability, and your :dollar: situation you could remove the top yourself and then take it to an upholstry shop. They can properly remove and sew in a new plastic window.
I did this about 6 years ago because money was tight and it cost me about $110.00 total.

Or just go get a new top with a glass window put on.
