pinging, rattleing and even detonation

TA 1521B timing set with the 4* marks lined up. I did degree the cam and the math worked out. I`ll call TA and see if there is some timing built in to the set. I don't think thats the case since the math was ok but I'm at the end of the road here.

    3:42's behind a M21 LIghtningbird.

Mark at this point it's worth a try. Original timing was at 8* with full 33* in at 2200rpms.

    any thoughts on cylinder pressures?

  3. mhgs

mhgs it just takes money !!

my motor with the 310 was the same way, always 200 or better with cylinder pressure. I was never really able to have the motor idle at anythin less than 1000 rpm anyways and always was running rich. At what rpm does the ping stop ?

cpk 71 im just a number

I know its a pain,i redid mine 3 times till i called mike to get the install right on the same timing chain, install straight up and see if it changes anything. The instructions are a little tricky until you get it. A timing cover gasket set is all you need.

I'be got mine installed straight up at the moment. Not sure what the timing is at, timed it by ear. I do have a couple problems, but I'm positive they are timing related. Every now and then I get a backfire while starting the car, or it pops when I let off the gas after having the pedal buried till the rpms come down. Will be fixing this issue when I install the advance curve kit this spring.

Being you have a 4 speed, are you sure your not lugging the engine?

Talked to TA today; I need to get some numbers from the cam "dial in". Lesson here!! keep your notes. I found a few numbers scratched on a pad and even then they had been written over.

No lugging the engine Mark this engine pings at what seems to be a lean fuel curve but fuel is not fixing it so I'm looking into the rather high compression this young motor is currently making.
$4000.00 plus untold hours of work and I can't put her on the street without damage. This is the fun part of the hobby right?

    Hey Pete
Been reading your thread with interest. I havn't had any pre ignition or detonation issues with my 350.....which is similar to your build.
Do you have any pre ignition? ie; does it "run on" after you turn it off? Any back fire? Did you have a recent valve job done? and was it done correctly?:puzzled:
Maybe ...just maybe I can help...

Heres the build thats giving me so much trouble:

72 -350 block align honed, deck squared with .005 taken off, bored .040 over, oil passage to the pickup drilled to , matching pump housing and pickup tube

Stock rods and crank balanced from harmonic to flywheel
TA cast pistons 10:1, 9cc dish and 7cc valve reliefs, file fit molly rings
TA 310 cam at 4* advance (unless I screwed this part up, Ill know shortly), TA cam Bearings

Home ported heads with hours and hours of work. No flow numbers since Im not aware of anyone that has a bench, however I did make up a bench that allowed me to see around a 20% drop in air pressure as it flowed over a .5 inch lifted valve. So change is there. Ta stage one stainless valves for a 350, 53 cc polished chambers, stock rockers

Stock intake with lots of clean up inside and gasket matched.

Stock exhaust manifolds opened up the 2-1/4 inches and cleaned up inside with reduced turning radius coming out of the port

    Modified 800 quadrajet

    71 350 distributor, Pertronix installed

No run on, back fire or other Mark. It's a head scratcher for sure.

Just found a youtube video I had forgotten about of my car running with the 310 cam. This is before I replaced the ST300 with the origional TH350 for the drive to Michigan.. Maybe in some way it'll give you an idea of what yours should sound like?

    YouTube 350 Walk around

Hopefully it'll answer some of the other questions I've been getting about how the 310 performs and such.. That, and I'm really not experienced enough to answer them. :bla:

    Update:
Been a long torturous path, however pinging has stopped! My clue was the engine compression starting to run OVER 200LBS. Since my notes were not kept I can only guess this is what happened. The mark on the cam gear is not exact so it can go on one tooth or the other. The way I lined it up gave me 14 and 26, so 26+14+180/2= 110. Dead on the money for the cam card right? I can remember coming up with 110 .5 Wrong wrong wrong. 26+14+180/2 the opening 14= 96. Thank to Santos at TA for pointing that out.
Well ......110 is not the number I was looking for in the first place, remember 4* advanced? I need 106. Im a very detailed person and totally lost on how this got by me. Soooo, spent this weekend with no interruptions and put the cam in straight up, numbers good, 4* advanced numbers good, short ride around the block no ping, YEA!
Took today off to do some test and tune. Its almost there. Did a few WOT passes today just to see if I could get some ping. Ultra slight noise, adjust the vac advance should fix it. It will be some time before I do that again though; need to get some break-in miles on it.
    Thanks for everyones help
