When i installed mine i tried a 1 inch spacer with my drop base air cleaner no go there either . I been having a flat spot on launching unless i foot brake the rpm's higher may be needing a bigger pump shot. Going to buy a air fuel meter to tune it right.
I'm using an Edelbrock 14" open air cleaner assembly with 3" K&N filter - I'm wondering if I'll have to drop down to a lesser height filter element for hood clearance.
I wouldn't go down in filter height, stay at 3" I think that would bring the air filter top too close to the top of the carb, and not giving the air enough room to "make the turn" down into the carb throat. A drop base style air cleaner assy. may be needed. Im wondering about me trying to use the GS air cleaner, even tho I have JUST enough clearance now, and both the K&N filter and lid, If the K&N lid is 1/4" away from the underside of the hood, how turbulent is the air going into the throat? Hmmmm, things to ponder:Brow:
The GS hood "Sucked" air out of the carb at higher speeds. the GS hood never worked like it was supposed to.
Walter, The air/fuel meter is a good idea but will only work to tune at a steady throttle opening, IE cruise speed or wide open. Probably won't tell you anything about the stumble. You need to increase your pump shot squirter size AND volume about 40%. Easy to do on a Holley, not so easy with Qjet.
I got rid of my stumble, I tightened the secondary air valve spring an 1/8th turn at a time, on the fourth adjustment the stumble was gonep I romped on it 3 or 4 times, slow to 20, floor it, up to 70, slow to 20, floor it, up to 70 etc, etc, good thing its a 4 lane road with light traffic, I hate doing this on city streets. Im going to throw on my MT's and try some full throttle starts and see where Im at, if all goes ok, its off to the track:laugh:
I feel Im going to have to get a drop base air cleaner, with the stock one sitting so damn high, Im almost sure the airflow thru the K&N Extreme lid is nill, being its so close to the underside of the hood
FYI, I gave taulb a drop base with 3" filter that I wasn't using and it fit with his sp3 (although I believe it was a close fit to the hood). Can't recall how much of a drop it was, but he gave it back when he sold the car so I could measure it and let ya know.
I have the k&n style airfilter as well. I guess i should pick up a drop base now so I don't get stuck looking for one at the last minute. I like the all Buick Red engine, with the sp3 and the tall valve covers I bet most that aren't Buick savvy will assume it's a big block. Definitely want to see some track times. I can't wait to make some passes. I might need a motor in my car first though...
Why would you need a drop base with a blow thru bonnet on it? You should have all kinds of hood clearance with the plumbing of the turbo setup you'll be installing I would think? Derek
Running the car N/A to finish out the season, I want to get some drive time in and if I wait for the turbos I don't think I'll be done before the snow comes haha. Just want to see what it will run on motor
Has anybody been to the track yet with the SP3? Norwalk is out for me, Friday TNT your lucky if you get two passes in before 10:30 pm, whoopty do Thompson is a contender, I seem to get more passes in there, up to 7 or 8 depending. Quaker City, never been there, but it sounds interesting, seems they have more nights of TNT:laugh:
Nope, not finished testing the dual setup yet. Too much stuff going on. Blew posi last track trip, AAA flatbedded home, threw orig 8.5 axle back in, cleaning, sandblasting, painting. Found worn parts in Auburn posi, upgraded to new Eaton. Also went with 410 ratio this time around. Took out the solid aluminum and went with all new polyurathane bushings, new shocks. Been breaking in new gearset and posi tonite. Did buy a FAST, dual A/F meter. Think the SP3 is going to stay put in basement for awhile yet. Running out of energy, building new home, boating season coming to a close, etc, etc, .....
Would be interested to hear what drop base ends up working for whoever uses one - drop depth, brand/model info, etc... Since I'm running an electric choke Qjet, hope my choices aren't even more limited if I have to go that route.
I can tell you this, I have an original L88 Corvette drop base cleaner on a T/A dual plane, (which is only 3/4" shorter than an SP3), with a 2" spacer, 850 Demon, 3" filter, and it fits under GS hood easily. Had a 4" filter in it for a short while, but figured I might touch the hood pulling burnouts and such. The L88 base sits the lowest of any by far.....
