pepping up a 72 350

  1. I have a 350 in my 57000 mile 72 skylark. right now it's a 2 barrel with all the smog crap still attached and working. i have a 455 in the works but thought it might be fun to play with the 350 while i take my time building the 455. obviously switching to a 4 barrel is the first big performance enhancing step, then comes dual exhaust but what other simple things wake these low compression engines up? what timing curve does a 350 respond well to? what rpm does the stock cam stop making power? The stock cam peaks very low in rpms my 76 350 peaks in power at 4500 rpm. For cheep upgrades use a ignition MSD box, remove the cat and any other emissions stuff if you don't have to pass a stiff test. Port match a early 4bb intake to your heads, add a spacer on the carb. Get a new fuel pump. There are some things you could buy now that you could switch to the other motor, keep that in mind. Goodluck.

For some cheap horsepower i would try some turbos. That motor has what, like 8-8.5:1 comp, then you probably have like a 3.08 gear in the back. A couple of T3's with a .63 A/R exhaust should make that motor real spunky. plus you should have stock drivability. You can pick up the turbos for like 100-150 a piece off a ebay or get lucky at the local yard. you can probably get like 400-450 hp and 450+ torque. They would spool up around 2000 rpms and be good till when you shift. :3gears:
With only 57,000 miles i think it would be perfect. For simplicity just run like 27 degrees total timing and do the blowthrough mods for the carb and be in like flint. Since your already going for the 455 you might as well have some cheap fun with the 350. Most junkyard setups depending on what you pay for used parts can should cost no more than 800 dollars. If interested visit turbomustangs.com, ( i know) they provide a wealth of knowledge on what all is involved in turboing a car and its not hard once you understand the principle. its basically route the exhaust in/out the turbo and route the air into the carb. Clear as mud right. :pp

thats sounds like an awsome idea. if u do go turbo u might want to keep the cam stock or no bigger then a gs350-110..

also a stall converter and shift kit would work

posi would get that power down better :beer
