This will probably sound really weird to most folks, but hopefully, not to the folks reading this Forum As some of you know, I bought my first car, a 70 GS 455, in 1983, from the original owner. It is Burgundy Mist, black vinyl top, blk buckets and console, tach and gauges, whitewalls and volcano Deluxe Wheel Covers. I ordered documentation from Wayne Roberts to prove that my car was an original hubcap car, since every time I go to an event people try to sell me sport wheels, to which I can only reply Its an original hubcap car. They generally just look at me like Im nuts and walk away. Today I got my documentation from Wayne Roberts. The documentation verified the long gone rear speaker, the blue wire for which I had discovered during the restoration last summer. Page Three included Option F-9 Wide Oval White Billboard Lettered Tires G70-14. Hmmm, raised white letters and hubcaps. Well that is actually how I bought the car Time to order some Polyglas tires Further down the arrow hit. Option V-2 Chrome Plated Wheels. I am stunned. One of my favorite things about my car has always been the hubcaps. Im going to keep them, but I hate not having the documentation!!! Back at the 20th anniversary I was considering trying to contact the original owner, just to say Hey, 20 years later I still have, and love, the car. Now, I NEED to contact him to find out the deal with the wheels! Stolen in the 70s? Swapped for sleeper effect? Now I HAVE to Know!! My previous 68 conv, blue, blue int, wht top (the rarest 68 conv interior, per the new Build Sheet) was a documented hub cap car (had the build sheet), but I put sport wheels on it (dont like 68 hubcaps.) WHERES THE JUSTICE!!!! OK, make me feel bad. Anyone with a documented hub cap car who has put on sport wheels, speak up. Anyone have a documented hub cap, Burgundy Mist/blk top blk bucket w/console, tach and gauges 70 455 car to trade? (only half kidding)
Got a 1971 Stage1 4 speed convertible...Documented with 14" G78 white wall tires and HUBCAPS. Cascade Blue with pearl interior and white top. Also had a 71 Stage1 numbers matching with the hubcaps and white letter F-70-14 wide oval tires.
I love the hubcap look, whether it is original or not. I vote to leave them on there for effect, and keep your eyes peeled for a hubcap/poverty cap car in the future :Brow: :TU:
Page Three included Option F-9 Wide Oval White Billboard Lettered Tires G70-14. Hmmm, raised white letters and hubcaps. Well that is actually how I bought the car Time to order some Polyglas tires I may be wrong , but I believe the G-70/14 Wide Oval Billboard Lettered tires were Firestones. I think only the G-60/15 tires were the Goodyear Polyglas...o No: There were some weird wheel/tire combos back then. My 71 GS 455 came with 14" chrome wheels and G-78/14 tires..ou: Must have been fun in the rain...:gt:
My understanding is that potentially tires of several manufacturers could come on any given car, over time. I've seen factory literature with Firestones and Uniroyals for 71 and 72. I think all the factory literature for 70 shows 15" wheels and Goodyears. (Of course, all G60-15s in 70 were Goodyear.) Anyone have any documentaion on tire brands for G70-14s in 70? (By the way, I'm STILL keeping the hubcaps!)
Or its just wrong. The window sticker of my 71 GS coupe has the chrome wheels listed but has the goofy super stock wheels.(which have grown on me) When I contacted the original owner he told me that he ordered the SS wheels, he paid for the SS wheels and it rolled off of the transport with the ss wheels on it. The original Goodyear G-70 14 white lettered tire, still mounted on the original ss rim is in the trunk. I don't know why the window sticker was printed up that way but it was. I have had buildsheet things like this too. My dad's 69 Wildcat has a tilt wheel listed on the build sheet but no tilt wheel ! (He bought it new, never had one) I like the hubcaps/wide ovals. Cool Deal. Leave it how YOU like it.
" Ouch, the truth hurts... " "Not as much as jumping on a bicycle with the seat missing, but it hurts" anyone guess the movie quote?
" Ouch, the truth hurts... " "Not as much as jumping on a bicycle with the seat missing, but it hurts" anyone guess the movie quote?" STAR WARS... "RING OF FIRE"? No, never mind that was the guy who picked up the Ben Gay by accident instead of the Preparation H !
I'm going to begin trying to track down the original owner, so maybe I'll be able to get to the bottom of this. Wish me luck...I'll keep y'all posted.
My '70 Stage 1 convertible came factory with 14" chrome wheels with wide ovals(if I remember correctly.) It was downright DANGEROUS!!! I now have 275 60-15's on the back and they barely make the grade in normal driving. I still don't understand the manufacturers' choices for some of these vehicles. Dan
"I still don't understand the manufacturers' choices for some of these vehicles. Dan" From my perspective... At that time the golf club manufacturers were still making woods out of wood. The tire and car manufacturers were just breaking out of bias ply. My 65 Vette had 7.75x15 bias ply white walls. Want to talk about scarey at 125 mph on a two lane road when you're getting on it?? Technology moves on, quickly. That was at the heart of the transition and you could get a wide range of quality. (edit) I also like the hub cap look and would like to get a set of dog dishes for the silver 72GS in my av. The sleeper look is very appealing.
Ken, that is from the Naked Gun. Nicholas, when I saw your car at BG, I said I have never seen a GS with those hubcaps on it. It is very Skylarkish. I love the dog dish caps myself.
