Original 70-72 drivers side mirror glass

Discussion in 'Parts wanted' started by Paul Massicotte, Mar 16, 2024.

  1. Looking for an original drivers side mirror glass for a 70-72. Non sport mirror.

Not sure if the passenger side is the same or if objects are closer than they appear

Saw the Parts Place repro glass but I’d like an original if possible

If remote, I have a pitted one listed on here pretty cheap.

I may still have a nos chrome GM mirror glass . I'm not sure if side specific. I'll take a look later in the week if no body else responds with one.

  7. Thanks guys. I grabbed one from Frank and should be working on prying it out of the backing soon.
If I need anything else I’ll be sure to reply.

Probably better to just cut old housing to be sure to save the glass.

  9. Well the remote mirror glass that I got from Frank was not the same shape as the non remote mirror I have. It was too wide on the side and too narrow on the top

I also bought a Burco 2115 model and it too was too small. Here’s a photo of the Burco

If any has a non remote mirror please let me know.

  10. No worries. I’d thought the glass was the same size or at least thought I read it here at some point.

I’ve got a non remote mirrow 70 with the tri shield on it. Driver quality glass is intact but I’m still it probably has some scratches

Paul- check with Brett- he was talking about POSSIBLY going to a glass company and getting the correct mirror shape cut. ALL of the reproductions, quite frankly, suck.

  13. Thanks Frank. Appreciate you searching. Going to try the local glass vendors. If they fall through I'll PM you.

Brett Slater's been trying glass shops in our area without any luck. I have a few I am going to ask.

So, it turns out that the remote and the non-remote mirrors use the same glass L & R - pt.#9817000.

Frank, you can remove that glass by cutting the housing with a wizzer wheel until you can get to the backing. The housing will be more trashed than it is, but, harvesting parts isn't always a pretty sight.

I'm going to a local place after work tomorrow. They weren't open today but tomorrow's their late day.

I spoke with someone there last week and found out today the owner has been in business since the late 70's. (He sold the family business and branched out on his own.)

While I didn't get an overly enthusiastic response to my question, he did tell me to bring in my mirror and he'd see what he could do.

At this point, I'm cautiously optimistic and will report back what comes of this tomorrow afternoon.

  17. There’s a screw you can get at behind the remote glass to allow it and the attached cable free of the mirror body.
Then you can use a pair of pliers to gently pry the aluminum backing from the corners and the lower edge of the glass. Once it’s bent back enough, you can slide a straight edge in there and remove the glass.

I was able to do this but the glass itself doesn’t seat all the way into the mirror body.

I dropped off a spare '70 mirror and an extra TPP repro glass I had here a little while ago. I thought bringing the glass was a good idea to show how bad they're cut to fit and also give an idea on thickness.

The glazer seemed pretty confident he'd be able to make some and said the glass he had was the next step/size thicker. This is good because originals were basically "flush" with the chrome housing and TPP glass does recess a bit when it's sitting in the mirror body.

I'm hoping to hear by Friday and will update this thread once I do.

Here's TPP glass. Notice the poor fitment:

This is the glass I had cut. Much better fit and also thicker. He charged me $50, which I don't think is terrible.

TPP glass is on the left. Notice the difference in thickness.

I'm having a few more made but they're already spoken for locally. Truth be told, I'm not too keen on shipping glass, so I'm not having any more made after the next few. That and I don't want guys prepaying and having to wait.

However, everyone on here likely has a glass company or two local to them and I would suggest bringing yours to them to do what I did.
