I'm was planning on ripping my #'s matching transmission out of my vehicle to preserve the value of the car (incase the case with the VIN cracked). I was told that I could buy an aluminum casing for the transmission and put the one with the VIN stamped on it aside. Is this true, and if it is, is it a good idea? I was going to buy another Muncie and rebuild it, but it would probably be easier for me to just use what I have and put a different casing on the tranny. Also, my transmission is all original from 1970, it has never been rebuilt (at least thats I've been told) and it shifts great. I don't know if this is a good or bad idea so let me know what you think. I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

IMO I think it would be easier to just get another transmission. That way you can tuck away the original for safe keeping.

You could purchase a Supercase and install your guts into it. That would give you the piece of mind that your VIN stamped case is tucked away.

But with all the improvements to the Muncie including gears, midplate etc... you could build a "new" muncie to beat on, except all this comes with about a $2k cost.

If you are doing all your own labor then your original concept is doable.
