Online Cowl Tag Decoder

Discussion in 'The "Paper Trail"' started by DataTagDecoder.Com, Jul 21, 2021.

  1. Hello all, I have developed an Online Cowl Tag Decoder for all GM cars (except trucks) for the years 1964-1972. I would like to encourage everyone to try it out and give us some feedback. What did we get right? What did we get wrong? Did you find it useful? Our mission is to offer this as a reference and is free of charge to use. We also have some stories and commentary specifically about Cowl Tags that you might find interesting.

Please visit https://datatagdecoder.com and let us know what you think. Thanks much!

Did not seem to work for me. I selected 69-72, but could not locate FL1 in the plant dropdown. Also could not locate Q-Q in the paint drop down. It seems to be Chevy-centric.

I wonder if he’ll reply or was his post here the electronic version of mailbox stuffing?

  5. Hi Randy,

This type of information is exactly what I need. It's not Chevy centric but there are gaps in the Buick and Pontiac data sets, Oldsmobile, Chevy and Cadillac are closer to "complete", which is why I am hoping that people try it out and let me know how it goes. Can you let me know which year(s) are not showing up properly? In order to not make this post 1000 miles long you can DM me here or use the contact form on the site.

    Hi pbr400,

Nope, no mailbox stuffing here! I'm a real person working on a real project and everyone is welcome to chime in with any issues.

Here is the trim tag I was trying to input. I was focusing only on 1970.

  9. FL1 has been added. Working on the paint codes so those should be up shortly.

  10. I only have two instances of paint code "Q" for Buick so I might have to dig some. Q for 1969 shows as Fire Glow Orange Poly and 1971 is Cortez Gold. Is there a good reference where they are all listed? I have most of the alphabet there. Special order paint codes? Thanks,

Q is, for 1970, a GSX only color called Saturn Yellow.

  12. Verified and Added. Thank you.

  13. Is that white top painted or vinyl?

Where can we see if it is bench or bucket?

Just checked the trim tag decoder for my 1970 GS455 and everything is correct except that the letter codes for vinyl tops as the upper body color are missing from the drop down menu. I sent an email to let them know. A for White, B for Black and so on.

Regarding the 163 interior code: that’s a notchback bench in Buckskin. 173 would be Buckskin buckets.

  20. I got your email, thanks for sending it along. It would not surprise me if yours might be a mis-stamp since these were all done by hand. What I can do is add the additional codes to cover the outlier but can I see a pic of your tag? Let me do some additional research. You can email it to me or post it here if you like.
