Hello As many have you have probably done, I have added an MSD Ignition (digital 6) along with an electric fuel pump and an electric radiator cooling fan to my 70 GS 455 . I run an optima red top battery and a remote ford selinoid and a starter from a mid 90's chevy lt1. My current stock style ( 55 amp I believe) alternator does not keep up with the demand now placed on my electrical system. I'm looking to upgrade to a higher amp 1 wire alternator to help aleviate the drainage on my battery. Can anyone suggest a good replacement alternator and its rating, along with any necessary wiring to accomplish this safely. Or can I just run the single new 6 ga. wire from the alternator direct to the battery or starter? I have all original wiring on my 70 GS 455 with the external regulator. Thanks for your help

Max Damage I'm working on it!

Todd at StageWon restoration is forum member here and sell lots of great stuff at good prices. He sells the kit for plugging in the newer SI style GM alternators.

There are a lot of these alternators available from many different vendors including your local auto parts store or wrecking yard. I like the "Tuff Stuff" brand which is made in Ohio.

    Summit racing sells these:

Napa has 213 4011SW which is a single wire alternator 63 amp. I run a 10SI from a 76 Buick (10SI) 63 amp with the wiring kit above on my '70 and didn't cut anything. It works nicely.

Does running one of these 94 amp alternators cause any problems with the original wiring in our cars?
