Have been hanging around this site enough to get comfortable and the computer skills are progressing to the point to tell this story.
Traveled to a car show at the fairgrounds in Canton Ohio. Pretty summer day and about a 40 mile drive from home. It sponsored by a local car club to raise money for childrens charitys. There was a good turn out of nice cars with a 50s D.J. and a good atmosphere. The judging was done differently than any where Ive been before or since. All participants got a ballot to vote for theyre favorite ten cars. No classes just the ten cars you liked the most. After counting the votes the top ten vote getters were asked to bring therere cars to the front and given identical trophies. My 70 GS convertible was one of the winners and this system produced an interesting cross section of cars showing the diverse tastes of all the participants.
I know youre thinking This should be about street racing to be posted here . That parts coming and the setup is worth it.
One of the other winning cars was a big block Chevelle convertible in with the same red and white color combo as my car. The owner wanted a picture of our cars together so we parked in a gassy spot with a good background to shot them. Lots of other folks thought this made a good pic as well and were lining up to take one.
About then some guy about nineteen or so with a 70 nova with a hole in the hood and a very noisy blower sticking through it starts bad mouthing our cars. Saying stock junk doesnt belong here. Several of the other people told him in no uncertain terms how they felt about his opinion and he stormed off. The next thing we know hes doing doughnuts on the chip&seal midway whereupon the show organizers threw him off the fairgrounds.
We all hung around to B.S. for awhile then the afore mentioned Chevelle and I left with me in the lead. Top down enjoying the great day. When we got stopped at a light about two blocks away who shows up but our friend in the Nova. Shooting the pipes and screaming for a race. With 35lbs of air in Goodyear eagle radials I didnt figure I had a chance but the guy in the Chevelle was egging me on in the mirror and I thought no shame in losing to such a highly modified car so I nodded and turned my attention to the light. When it turned Green I came down easy trying not to go up in smoke. I got a pretty good bite and had him by a fender at the one two shift. Kept it on the floor for two blocks and had him by a length then a light ahead went RED. Off the throttle and on the brakes HARD. Got whoed down to see the Nova come up beside me and the guys girl-friend is hanging out the window to her waist trying to get a look at my car. I asked if He wanted to go again and he wouldnt even look at me just yelled at his honey to get back in the car. He made a left and I never saw the car again.
Ran across the Chevelle owner later and he said almost had to turn on the wipers from all the black smoke from the Novas exhausts. Have seen him several times since and we always have a laugh about that day heck Im smiling now
Hope this brought a smile to youre day.
    :)
