i have a 70 skylark she is tore down to the frame. i have heard of some guys using aluminum drums, are these only on front or are they all around. do you buy these aftermarket, or off another year and model car,if so do i need to change anything. disc brake conversion isnt quite in the budget now, but i can do it later. i want to try alum. drums because of the heat, with the motor i am building ill need all the help i can get.I AM A OLD SCHOOL RODER "SEE HOW FAST YOU CAN GO AND WORRY ABOUT THE BRAKES LATER HA HA HA" the other question is , i am converting a 350/350 car to a 455/400. the tranny i have i a 400 long shaft out of a 73 225, will it fit or do i need a short.i think ther is 3 different lenths of 400s. i noticed the different holes in the frame for adjusting the lenth of the c/member. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE VERY HELPFULL, ESPECILY ANY 350/350 TO 455/400 SWAP TIPS THANKS/// ' :beer :3gears:
Well Shane, brakes are especially important-remember you only have one chance when you hit that brake pedal. It's easier to get a car to go than it is to stop it. I would recommend running disc brakes up front and and then put aluminum drums(from a G-body car-Regal,Monte Carlo). The long tail 400 you have will not work in your Skylark. You have to swap the tailshaft housing and the output shaft in order for it to fit your car.Otherwise, the rest of the trans will work.
thaks for the come back on this. i guess ill save a little more cash and buy one of those disk brake kits, a lot of places sell them does anyone know who is good on ther kits. one more thing was ther a certain year or model that had the alum. drums on them, and do i use the same shoes my car came with?
Disc brakes Shane, I have a complete disc brake set up for a 64-72 A body w/ about 1k on them. Includes new rotors, brake hoses, bearings, seals, rebuild calipersw/ pads and spindles w/ nice dust shields. I am going to list it on the board in a week or so but if you want them I will sell them for $350.00 shipped. Let me know.
