Did Olds make a 350 Rocket? If so what is the value (lets just say it runs) not sure of the condition.
All I know right now is that it runs.

Also what is the value of an Olds hood with the vents.

Am considering a buying a Skylark with these pieces in it. Trying to figure out if he is asking to much.

    Thanks

"Rocket" is just a name that Olds used to "sell" its motors. Meaning, there's nothing special about it unless the motor happened to come out of one of the high-perf 350 cars that Olds made like a W-31.

If it's a good running 350 then it's worth whatever good running small block motors in your area bring....$200-400 maybe and that assumes you can find a buyer to come pick up a fairly heavy item.

Hood with vents??? What year?? Just depends on condition but in general all steel Olds hoods aren't in massive demand. Again, it also depends on the overall condition and whether or not there happens to be someone in your area looking at the time.

You really need to ADD YOUR LOCATION TO YOUR PROFILE so people won't constantly have to ask where you are located when you post on the site.

    Thanks
Was not sure about the "Rocket" not sure about the year of the hood either. Have not seen the car in person yet.

Didnt the 442 hava a "vented" hood"? Two long raised areas following the stripes from cowl to grill, with the openings near the front?

That's a Buick hood in the picture....on the Buick. Looks pretty cool on there. I can't tell many details from the pic but it looks like someone modified the stock steel Buick hood.

    Ok
I have not seen the car in person yet. The description says Olds 350 Rocket under the hood. That is the best pic they have of it. I did not study it close but at first glance I thought it was an Olds hood.

If I buy this car it will not be based on pictures alone. Still trying to decide whether to spend the money.

PGlade can you make anything of this pic. The ad says Olds 350 Rocket. Before spending money or time I am just trying to figure this out. Am going to call Mon.

John-Pics are really too small to tell anything.

Here's some info you can gather:

    1) Heads...on the D side head at the bottom front corner to the L of the #1 spark plug hole--you'll see a larger number CAST into the head surface. Make note of this. If it's a CAPITAL LETTER instead of a number then they are big block heads. Small blocks got a NUMBER on the heads.

2)Intake..cast iron? Aluminum? If aluminum look on the top of the intake port/runner in front of the carb. If it says "Oldsmobile W-350" then it's a 70 W31 alum intake. Not likely but you might as well see.

3)Blocks...nothing special so no need to go into a bunch of detail there.

What I'm getting at is THE RARE CHANCE it's a W31 motor ('68, '69 or '70) you need to know so you don't end up getting rid of a rare piece for a pittance.

Again, if it's nothing "special" then it's just a running motor and probably worth what someone will give you for it. Does it smoke? How does the compression look? All those things determine value at some point....a motor can run but if the compression sucks or it smokes then it's just a core.

Hood: Really looks potentially "cool"...would like to see better pics. Kind of looks like someone took the idea from the 71/72 GTO hoods and applied it to the Buick (if in fact those are actual scoops in the picture and not just some black painted areas that are supposed to look like scoops).

To sell the motor you could register and put an ad over on Realoldspower.com...you might find someone on there near you that is looking for a core or running Olds motor.

    Stay tuned.

Thanks for the help. My brother-in-law is on the way to look at it for me. The pics I posted are what he has in the ad.

    I will keep you posted.

It would be interesting to see how they modified the hood. There are a couple of things to be aware of though. Check to make sure the fuel lines aren't cobbled together. Olds fuel pumps are on the opposite side from a Buick. Wire bundle is probably hacked as well due to the difference in starter location. I have a 350 Olds in my 68 Skylark and am dealing with these issues right now. I plan on keeping the Olds motor due to cheaper performance parts and I personally like Olds engines. Good Luck.
