In the long run, you'll be better off selling this car and finding a convertible.

I could not agree more. Unless of course, you've got a stash of cash that's burning a hole in you wallet.

I do not know cats but in 68 would a 4 door have an open frame or a a boxed frame like most converts?

I just posted a conv Wildcat for sale in the "cars for sale leads" section.

Sell yours and buy a factory conv. There is more than you want to know or will ever learn in the differences between a factory coupe and convertible.

If you are up for the challenge it can be done. The logical plan is to sell the car and get a convertible, but this isn't a very logical hobby.

    Here's some things to consider.
    1) You'll have to reenforce the frame to replace the structure provided by the roof. You'll have to overbuild the frame because the convertible roof will weigh more than the steel roof and the frame has to carry the weight of the extra steel used to re-enforce it.
    2) A 4 door will require extra bracing for the pillar with the rear door hinges. 3) If the windows in the doors have frames you'll have to make them removeable. If it's a hardtop they'll seal against each other.
    4) The scissor style roof (full size GM from 71-76) folds behind the rear seat instead of beside it. This will be your best bet for a roof. There are rumors that this roof was designed with a 4 door in mind. You may have to extend the roof frame a bit. This is a complex roof and any modifications will have to be carefully done. Also you'll need custom vinyl if you change the roof.
    5) A lift off roof would be simpler but much less convenient.

If you decide to tackle it, send lots of pictures.

I know where there is a mid to late 70's 4 door Pontiac convertible resides. :TU:

Unfortunately, it doesn't move much since it sports a lovely growth of flowers.  One day, I'll snap a pic or two of it.

I concur with advice others have given, sell your 4 door, and buy a ready made factory convert. :TU:

Maybe take a good look at the 1960s Lincoln four door convertibles for ideas.
