Just got our 71 350 Skylark a new Oil Pressure gauge (Upgrade from the Ol' idiot light) and want to make sure I understand what the readings should be...

When cold, I crank the motor and it shoots up to around 55psi for a few seconds, then drops down to close to 10psi at idle. Is that normal?

That sounds typical... As long as you have about 40 psi at 3000 rpm and 50 psi at 4000 rpm you should be fine.

10 lbs at hot idle is fine, hot idle meaning after a long drive on the highway (10 miles or so) then comming to a stop at the exit. As Sean said,as long as the pressure rises with rpm, your fine.
