How difficult is it to replace the gasket? Also may have to do the rear seal. Not wanting to remove the engine from the car.

    Somewhat depends on the chassis.

I've done a couple of oil-pan, rear-main-seal replacements "in the chassis" and I'll never do another if the crossmember is in the way (which is pretty-much EVERY car and light truck, but not necessarily medium- or heavy-duty trucks.)

Pull the engine. You'll do a better job with the engine flipped upside down on an engine stand, than if you're working on your back like a prostitute.

On a 70 Riviera, which I'm assuming you have based on your screen name, then you also have to get the steering linkage out of the way. Specifically the centerlink. I made wooden blocks to go in between the engine mounts and perches to keep the engine raised so the engine crane isn't in your way.

I've done it but like schurkey said, it's a pain in the ass.

I did my 68 Wildcat, center sump, in the car. It's not simple. As Jason said, center link has to come out plus lots of little stuff like fan shroud and loosen trans cooler lines. It's very doable but a fussy task. Of course pulling an engine is not a snap either.

Thanks all. That settles it then. I will put it off a little longer, its not leaking a huge amount. If I am going to have to pull the motor may as well do a rebuild as well.
