Oil Out The Breather!!!!

Discussion in 'Street/strip 400/430/455' started by 73RivGS-Stage1, Jun 22, 2003.

  1. Ok,
I've got a 73 455 .060 with Sp1 stock stage1 cam, stock qjet and exhaust .This thing blows alot of oil out the breather. Manifold vacuum is stable at 18-19. The motor only has about 1200 miles on it, any ideas? Also it seems like it is missing a cylinder a bit, it is noticable when I am in gear at idle. the vacuum is highest and it runs the best when I advance the timing well past 12 btdc.

Do you have a PCV (positive crank case ventalition) hook up? Could be a bad one with a lot of blow by.

    Hi,
I actually have tried 2 new ones with no luck, still the same problem. I also checked to see if the hose was clogged and it is clear.
I am a bit baffled here.

Is it also blowing oil out of the dipstick? I had this problem when rings lost there seal. Tom

You may need to try different style breathers, all are not created equal. I setteled with a cheap Mr. gasket brand on mine, and I only run one on the rear drive side.
One of the worst I tried was the K&N, the oil just went right up to the filter, and would drip out.

I don't mean to be a doomsday-type, but the last time I had that happen was due to a broken piston.

A compression test showed 35 PSI in that cylinder (#4). If you get the chance, a compression test would be appropriate.

    Hey All,

As to the dipstick... seeems not to be coming out of the dipstick.

Ya know, a compression check may be a good idea... I just assumed all is good since the mileage is so low but am yet to check it. I have the cheapo mr gasket breather on mine too. I am drivin this thing about 50-60 miles a day and go down about a half quart of oil every two weeks.

If you take the oil filler cap off with the engine running is there a strong pulse of air coming out? If yes that would indicate blow by past the rings or in a worst case scenario a hole in a piston. I would definitly do a cranking compression test on all 8 and look for any variations between them.

    Well,
My day off is tomorrow, so I guess I will do the compression test then.
I will have to see if I am getting pulses from the valve cover opening I haven't checked it yet.
The motor sat for 2 years after the rebuild with about 400 miles on it, is it possible the rings never seated properly? It has about 1100-1200 miles on it now. If that is the case is there anything I can do to fix it?

Hopefully the pistons are ok... I will post the results tomorrow.

    Thnx for the help,
    Clay

Quick question. Have you seen the oil coming out, or have you just seen oil around the breather and valve cover. I ask because I thought I had the same problem awhile back. It turned out the be the power steering hose, though. It was spraying fluid all over the valve cover and onto the breather.

  11. oil...

Ok, it was 90 plus on tuesday so i have not done a compression check yet.
I will get to it Sunday.

I have half a mind to just rebuild it anyways. this motor has only 1100-1200 miles I want to change to forged pistons and up the compression a bit. If I do this will I have to have it rebored or will it just be able to be tanked, and honed? Problem is the block is .060 over already, no room to grow.

If the engine only has 1100 miles on it. You could probably get away without doing anything to the cylinders as long as there is a good cross hash still present. A light hone at the very most.

  13. Still blowin

As for the oil blowin... it still does it, doesn't seem to be any pressure in the valve cover seems to only do it when at higher RPMS,
as long as nothin else breaks I will be doing the compression check soon.

  14. fixed

    ok,
all i did was add a tube to raise the breather a couple inches over the valve cover, and the problem was solved, not a drop now!
Only issue now is that it looks like a mushroom on top of my valve cover...lol

    thanks everyone for your help,
