Ok folks, here my issues for today. Wanted to adjust the points gap, crank the engine over to get close to the cam lobe than did the rest by hand. When i placed the feller gauge to check the gap is when i hear a spark....Duh left the ignition key on. Knew right there and then that this wasn't going to go well.
I have this ignition box and i trouble shot it to be working as it should.

So no spark out of the coil and when i crank the engine the tach move all over the place.
Point gap is correct at .016 per the Buick manual.
So did i fry the coil?
Thanks in advance for all the help.
P.S. Can a Mod fix the title to read No spark from the coil. Thanks

First time installing the box, or were you using it before? Engine ran before you changed the points?

The car was running fine before messing with the points.

Max Damage I'm working on it!

I guess now that's it's broke you'll have to fix it.

    (Sorry I couldn't resist)

OK, same point set, so you adjusted it wrong most likely. None of what you did would harm the coil.

Use a breaker bar to move the crank with the cap off. Stop when the cam high spot is on the rubbing block of the points. Turn the point adjustment and close the points until they just touch, then back a 1/2 at turn.

Yes same point set. Point set to .016 as per the Buick manual. Yup used a breaker bar to where the point started open then checked with the gauge.

No, you need to make absolutely sure that the rubbing block is centered on the high point of the cam. Then adjust it.

In a set up like this, all the points do is trigger the box. They carry next to no current, so they last forever. Once you set them, they last forever, no reason to adjust them.

You tried to fix something that wasn't broken.

Thanks Larry. Will work on it tomorrow and try it you way. So what up with the tach moving all over the place when i was cranking it over?
    That never happened before...

Have no idea, but that will probably resolve once you get the engine running.

Did you test the coil by touching power to the positive side with the coil wire close to a ground? If that fires, it isn't the coil.

Next, with the coil wire still near ground, repeatedly ground the trigger wire for the CD box. That should spark the coil too.

If both of those pass, it isn't the CD box or the coil.

Yes Greg, I did all that before posting. Followed the trouble shot for the CD box manual.
I have a tendency to over think things. One of my many flaws. Glad i have this place to slap me out of it.
    Thanks.
