No power to my drop top.

    Hey Everybody,

I have a ‘68 GS 400 drop top that started having the weak up and down top issues until it finally stopped going up (yeah…. Just like you said my wife) I did my online research and it sounded like I may have either a leak or air in my lines.
I pulled out the back seat and checked all the lines and didn’t see any leaks but I could see a lot of gaps in the fluid lines where there was no ATF fluid so I’m thinking air in the lines.
More YouTube and I see how to add a bit of fluid and with the plug out run the pump to purge the air.
I was all set to do that and when I went to my top “ up and down” switch I had no power.
So I…. Being a retired IT guy
    1. Pulled the switch out of the dash to test its ability to be open and closed. Seemed okay
    2. Checked the convertible top circuit breaker fuse in the fuse block. Yeah, I didn’t know what that was but it tested closed anyway.
    3. Thought maybe the up/ down switch was plugged in backwards, swapped it around. Still no power to the top.

I think I’m going to take my 12v battery charger and hook it right to the top motor leads. If it starts the top, well then I have a full nightmare on my hands.
Good thing I only drive my girl in good weather.

Any thoughts on why things may have gone sideways with this effort will be really appreciated.

    Thanks

    Rick

    TrunkMonkey Totally bananas

If you ran the pump motor too long with low fluid condition it may have burned out.

You'll find out once you bypass the wiring and switch with power directly to the pump motor.

I had a top motor fail a few years ago. It manifested itself in a different tone combined with increased draw; it would go down almost the whole way, tripping the breaker right before finishing. Up would trip just before half way.

Had smoke come out of the dash when I was putting my top up a few days ago. It went up but I know the end is near for that switch
