Newbie roll bar questions!

Discussion in 'Race car chassis tech' started by ethan, Jul 28, 2004.

    ethan buicks rock!

Ok, so I'm lurking in V8Buick territory that I don't normally visit... the racing forums!

I'd like to learn more about roll bars/cages. I had thought about buying and installing a pre-fab 4 or 6 point roll bar. My car won't likely be fast enough (yet) to need one but maybe it would be a fun project. I mainly want a roll bar so I can install harnesses. I don't really like just having lap belts. I'd also really like to maintain the use of the back seats...

Anyone have pictures of their 4 or 6 point bars? Any with modifications that allow the use of the rear seats? I heard something about installing a bar with pins so that it can be removed, making it easier to get in back. But isn't this the same bar that the harnesses are attached to? Thanks for the input! Pictures appreciated!!!

    :TU:

Here are some illustrations of some pre-fab designs I've found. Would you even be able to attach harnesses to a 4 point system?

The crossbar is where you would attach a harness. The upper illustration does not have one, but it would be passenger friendly.

The best way to have a functional roll bar/cage that can maintain a back seat would be to have a custom unit installed. I have seen a cage with the rearmost bars leaving the main hoop and following the roofline and back glass to the rear frame. This allowed the rear seat to be maintained. Rear passengers would have to deal with the crossbar though. Use good, thick padding on the bars and make sure there are seatbelts. Don't forget to have them sign a release form.

The rear seats get used in my race car, and the way Adam described is correct. I bought the roll bar kit from Art Morrison, I didnt have to pay shipping, since they are so close.

Anyway, I installed a swingout on the drivers door. The swingout bar I had bent a little in the middle so it would clear the door handle. Very EASY!

The kit was for the bar to go over the rear seat and hug the side of the car. Two simple bends into it, and it goes down next to the coil towers into the frame.

I can still place both Drag tires in the trunk also with the toolbox, jack, drill for the long wheel studs, etc.
