Just bought my 65 Skylark. It has some rust around the rear window lower corners. I need to remove the window trim, as well as the other chrome body trim near the window. How do I remove all this without damaging it?
Also, can the gas tank be replaced with one for/from a Chevelle of the same years?
    Thanks.

    Hi Phil -

The rear window trim is held on by little clips that catch the outer lip of the trim. The clips have sort of an angled slot that slides over a mushroom type pin that's welded into the window channel. I would suggest that you go to a body shop or parts store and get a look at these clips - you'll be better able to understand how to remove them.

The trick to taking the trim off without trashing it is to get the clip to let go of the trim BEFORE you pull the trim up. There are a variety of tools to do this, a good one looks like a flat pair of tongs. The tongs are pointed, and you slip them under the trim and slide along until one of the points catches on a clip. Then you work the other point in and squeeze the handles together. This pulls the clip away from the outer edge of the trim and lets the trim pop loose.

Go slow and you will be able to get all of the clips loose this way. If you find what we all expect (rust holes in the window channel) you'll need to take the back window out to make a good repair. You can use a fairly thick music wire and a couple of wood dowels to cut through the rubber seal material and take the window out. Then remove the rusty metal and weld in new.

I don't know what gas tanks interchange with Skylark/GS, maybe you could find out at a recycler that has a Hollander's exchange manual, this is a book that shows parts interchangeability.

Good luck, hope your car is lots of fun!
