Has anyone tried or had any experiance with the reproduction Hurst competiion shifters? I was going to send an original off to be rebuilt by Hurst but a new one may be cheaper.
Dave, I thought all Hurst shifters had a lifetime guarantee. I'm fairly positive they do, even after Mr. Gasket bought them, you can send them back and they will rebuild them...I thought for free. Maybe someone here knows. I would assume your original is probably better than what you can buy now. Many new shifters don't have the old stop bolts, etc.
I would check with Dennis Maroudas as an alternative to Hurst. He also offers a top of the line lever replating service. Hurst went way up on their rebuilds. Now if all you have is so badly pitted that no plating will help then I might look to a pit free refurbished unit. Dennis Maroudas DMELLC@Charter.net 606 237 6648
I do believe there is a charge as I had one done years ago for a 67 Firebird You might want to check out Year one as they use to advertise this service (basicly they would send it to Hurst) Either way should be cheaper than new, I recently put one in my 65 and no complaints othere than the handle is a little different than a stock 64/65 handle though is removeable so easier to get in the car, also depending on your application, you can make a adaptor to install a Muncie style handle if you are looking to keep the interior orginal looking good luck,
No the Mr Gasket (current owner of Hurst) rebuild service is not free. I think you might me thinking about warranty for defects. And they have gone up a lot since the last one I sent them one of these. I would take a look at Dennis doing it today.
I had one rebuilt at Hurst (Mr Gasket). Guy named Bob very friendly, helpful but service definitely not free, more like $300ish but looks and feels like brand new, haven't installed it yet of course!!!!!! Tom
Well, guess I was wrong, a rebuild is not free. It still may be the way to go, it's doubtful replacements are as good as originals. I'm not familiar w/ Buick shifters, but I know many 60's + 70's Hurst had stop bolts to prevent bending your rods or damaging your tranny. Some didn't have the bolts, but had tapped holes for the bolts if you wanted to add them. I doubt the new shifters have any provisions like that now. I remember an article some years ago in a muscle mag where they sent a Hurst out to be rebuilt and showed/described the rebuild. If a part was worn they replaced it along with the shims, etc. It looked well done. Pete, the GTO guy is the guru of Hurst as mentioned in another thread. I have his book, it's excellent. I think he has more than one book out now. You could also send the handle out to be chromed yourself, that would save some $ and SH.
Wow 300 I think I paid 75 bucks back in the mid 90's The new replacements are the same as the originals other than the removable handle Even have stop bolts Depending on application you may be able to find a nos aftermarket as there was a guy about a year ago who hand a dozen, guess he bought out a trans shop may try a search Good luck again
The stop bolts were only used in the aftermarket shifters. I've never seen a factory installed Hurst shifter with them. They're a good feature and can be added but not 'correct' if you have a show car.
I have used both. In all out competition a new replacement shifter will out perform a rebuilt original any day, any time in most every circumstance. If you race a lot go with the new replacement. If you are wanting originality go with the rebuilt original, it will perform well.
