I just put a new starter on my car...

    68 Buick Lesabre 350/4bbl

the old starter was dragging and had to be smited everyonce in a while to get it to turn over...

New starters solenoid has 1 big post and 1 small post..
old one had 2 small 1 big

I have read where the purple bypasses the R wire to give full power to the coil only while craking... yellow wire gives 12 v to the solenoid only while cranking..

    Problem:

The parts girl said to hook both smaller wires to the 1 small post.. (and yes the 2 bigger ones to the bigger post)

Now with both wires hooked to the same 1 smaller post my car will start only while cranking but when key is returned to th erun position the motor dies as if the coil is now getting 0 V

Think I may have burned up my r wire?

I have no idea but it seems like the motor runs fine if you holed the key in cranking position... (i only did this about 8 secs but you can tell the sound of a running buick 350 with a glasspack...

let go of the key and it goes to run/on postion and it dies as if you turned the key off...

    Thanks for any advise...:)

You have a solenoid for HEI ign. You need the solenoid w/3 posts.

    Madcat455 Need..more... AMMO!!!

    Yep..

they gave you the wrong starter... with the R wire hooked up to the same post as the Trigger, it is only seeing voltage when the Key is turned..

    Good Luck

I had the same problem when I bought my new starter. It only had 2 posts, and my old one had 3. I took it back and found out that they gave me the wrong part number. It was VERY close, like both numbers were the same EXCEPT for a letter at the end of one of the numbers.

Thanks for the replies so far!

    Here's what is new...

I took the wrong starter back and got the right one.

I installed it and puy the yellow wire to the s post and the purple wire to the r post and the 2 big ones are joined on the big post.

Now when I turn the key to the crank position nuthin happens...

The lights on the dash change just as the did before.. You know.. the oil and check ingin lights?...

so... I used a test light and allthough extreemly hard to reach I started thinking the yellow wasn't getting the 12v to the solenoid..

Next I proved that it wasn't by runing a jumper wire from the battery + down under the car with me with the smallest amont of coating snipped off and felt like I was playing "Operation" as I snaked it around everything in my way and lightly brushed the s post.. viola it cranked over...

So now I go and recheck my fueses... still all look good to me...

It's getting dark so I install another wire on the spost and run it through firewall and touch to fuse baox at an aproipriate spot and it cracks again...
I turn the key to run and damn.. same as before... the thing will sound (glaspacks mind you) like it is stated, running and firing on all 8 till I stop touching the new crank wire....

there goese my work around of a push button starter idea...

Please HELP!!??? I have been in good spirts all day long but i am hungry and tired and mondy moring is at turn 4 and headed for the finsh line...:Dou: :Do No: :error:  :ball:

I have been staring at the diagram and zooming in and out and HEY... do I have my purple and yellow wires crossed?

S post is my yellow and R port is my purple...

I thought I read that somewher..

Also dose my car have a resistor wire going to the coil or not?

I don't see one on the diagram..

    Thank you...

yes I did have them crossed.

    Boy what a day...

But three people said "nice car" or some variation and three women stopped to chat with me about how they have changed a starter before too... :)

And no car payment of course or high insurance!!

I still love my old Buick and thanks guys for the help!!

where does the purple wire lead to? i am new to the site and new to cars in general. i removed the starter and noticed that my purple wire is cut and i am unable to find where it was attached. i have an electronic distributor, so maybe i don't need it? also, my yellow wire is mangled and holding on by a few threads, do i need it? my starter was working fine, but my headers are old and rotten and heat-soaking my engine bay. i have a 1970 buick gs 455 in the works....and i am way over my head

    thanks

oh ok, thanks, good advice. by the way, the confusing thing was that the previous owner cut the purple wire and spliced it with a yellow wire and covered it in a mess of electrical tape :puzzled:. i got the starter back on, but i am waiting for my battery to charge so i can start it and see if it needs shims...

I would lay some purple iiant on the spliced-in yellow wire to avoid furthur confusion..

i like where your head's at...also good advice. i have found so may goofy jerry-rigging on this car from previous owners that i need to keep a list of them for if my car ever needs to go to a mechanic...it will save me hourrly rates of confusion and code-breaking.
