Recently, at the prestigious "Eyes on Design" show held at the Edsel and Elenor Ford Estate, our FAST racing buddy Dave Dudek was invited to attend. This is a "invitation only" concours type show featuring a different theme every year. Two years ago, the theme was "Muscle Cars". Last year, they featured "Concept Cars". This year, the theme was "Race Cars". We're talking pedigree, internationally known race cars were trotted out for this high class event. Lemans winners ( the 24 hour French endurance race, not the Pontiac LeMans ), Formula winners, Indy500 cars, old drag cars like Gas Ronda's Russ Davis Ford Mustang and Dick Landy's AFX Coronet amongst others. They had "salon" cars like Ferrari, Porsches, and Jaguars from the 50's-60's, motorcycle racers, even the So-Cal Special and Edelbrock Special of early Bonneville Salt Flat fame. They Featured a class called "Street Racers-Current" which mainly was a showcase of carbon fiber hooded ricers with 14 turbos and 8 jugs of Naaaws, dude. And we found Dave and his dad situated in the "Street Racers-Past" group. Included was a killer 1962 421 Catalina, the blue Baldwin-Motion Camaro recently seen in MuscleCar Enthusiast, the Silver Bullet 1967 Hemi GTX, a Yenko Nova and so forth! Here's a pic of Dave standing by his Challenger waiting for the butler to come around again with the watercress hors d'oeuvres! Here is Dave's Challenger next to the Yenko! It was an awesome show! These were cars that I have read about growing up as a child. Cars with so much history! I went around there commenting to Karen the entire time "I remember reading about that one", or "I can't believe they got this out here for a show like this"! ( like last year's Michael Schumacher's F1 Ferrari ! ) It was a walk down racing memory lane! I'll be putting up the pics later on my web page for those of you who would like to see some of these racing gems. As a side note......we also ran into Diego-aka 442w30-the "Voice of the PSMCDR" whilst standing in front of Dave's car! We had a great time!
Cool scene!! pretty prestigous Frank, did you get any pictures of that '62 Catalina?? huh, huh, huh,...:Brow: JH :beer
3 tone interior too. Red, burgandy, and white. 4 speed. here's Dick Landy's altered wheelbase AFX Hemi Coronet...
few more from the show.... Here's the Formula 1 Ferrari....nothing like a 18,000rpm redline, eh? :eek2: versus some 1950's technology! Here's the So-Cal Special made from a drop gas tank off a WWII plane!
Thanx Frank, check your PM's.. dammmm, I wish that 421 car was for sale. I'd pony up to the table for that one for sure. JH :beer
Re: few more from the show.... The red 50's dragster next to the black one belongs to a good friend, David Crane, from Battle Creek Michigan. He was the "hot car" tech guy at US131/Martin Drag strip for years. He has a dragster museum full of old dragsters and related things. He's a real trip. Heres to ya Dave. :TU: Could you post a picture of the red one Frank? Thanks.
Thanks for the nice comments and for posting the pictures. That was one sweet show, kind of hard to get bored walking around there with all those cool old race cars. Talking to an old NASCAR racer or two, I heard of some pretty cool ways those guy`s use to cheat. Filling the frame with gas for extra fuel capacity, etc. real cool stuff.:TU:
Cheaters That is a really neat show, Dave, and an honor to be requested to participate. Way to go. Your comment on Nascar cheating reminded me of one of the stories in Dale Smith's new book " Racing to the Past...Oldsmobile and its demise". He was into all kinds of performance stuff, not just Nascar, NHRA, and Indy style racing and one of the early things was the Pure Oil Trials at Daytona in 1963. Seems Pontiac was thrown out of the event when they found "auxiliary" fuel cannisters hidded under the fender with a switch in the fuel economy portion of the trials. I guess one of the bogus tanks started leaking in the staging area before the alloted one gallon of gas was put in for the test. John Z. got into a lot of heat with GM brass over that one as it was highly publicized.
Another NASCAR cheatin' moment.. At one time, the team/driver could designate which side of the engine that NASCAR could tear down for post-race inspection. Do you notice any loop hole with this notion??? Build one side all nice and pretty and legal, the otherside..........well...............we can only imagine. This came from Roy Nacewicz -who owns at least three of the Midget racers that were parked across from Dave- who used to work for Holman-Moody back in the day! CHEATERS! I tell ya, CHEATERS every one of them!
want a closer pic of the red pontiac with the 8 lugers on it. when he get home from missuri with it i'll take a few more. i do belive thats the one with the three dueces on it as well corect. i'll have to ask him.
If you aint cheating you aint trying:Brow: . And... If you get caught cheating you aint trying hard enough ou: ...
