Just picked up a 71 GS that originally had a 4 speed and the previous owner switched to automatic. The car still has the clutch pedal installed and I heard someone mention that there is a company manufacturing brand new muncies for about $1700 Anybody know the name of this company?
    Thanks,

  3. Check out gearzone.net they do a bit of work with Muncie four speeds. I know you can get a brand new muncie from them, but I'm not sure about price.

    Hi Mike

I am a the owner of a 71 gran sport with a manual trans too. That's pretty neat if you have a numbers matching car that was a four speed. If yours is a worst case scenerio 350 cu in. like mine then you are the owner of one of the 358 that were made. A rare car indeed and well worth restoring if the numbers match it will add lots of dollars to the value.
The problem I have with mine is in the rear end ratio. It has some low gearing 3.23 if yours is simular you will find that it will be very slow off the line with a muncie manual trans and the gears are to close in there ratios between 1st. and 2nd.. I am considering going to a richmond t-10 that is like a clone but the gear ratios are spread apart alot more. quicker off the line but still has the top end.
If you have a few more dollars the tremic 5 speed is the way to go. You get the low gearing off the line you want but it is actually an overdrive trans, going below the 1.00 ratio and I think there are 2 different 5th gear choices.
There are a lot of choices for transmissions out there the big thing is finding a bell housing. I would make this my first on the to do list. If you have it the rest can be done. If you have trouble finding a used one you might check out lakewood bellhousings, they make a lot of after market ones.
The main thing to realize is that this is a big project that could add $5000 to value of the car if it really was a four speed. Take your time and research the project out.
Get your vin numbers and the numbers off the cowl tag and contact Duane here on the board everyone knows him. He's the archive guy and he can tell you what you actually have before you invest a bunch of money.

    Best of luck Dave

I bought one of the new 4-speeds from these guys. It is excellent! It performs brilliantly and I have never missed a shift since getting it. I got the one with the 2.56:1 first gear (rock crushers were 2.2:1, too low) . My cars got a 3.64:1 rear end so this works great. Note previous post on rear end ratios and alternate trannies with better 1st gears. I also have a 4-speed Wildcat with a 2.2:1 first gear and it takes a lot of clutch work to get it going even with a 3.42 :1 rear end.

Harder to find is the proper gear shift lever. I think all the linkage is now being repo'd by Dave Kleiner.

If you were to go from a auto to a manual, whoulkd you have to change the rear axle ratio?

    Anthony,

NO, the rear will still work. You need to know what gears are in it to put the right trans into it to make things work properly.

I put in a 4-speed . It is a close ratio m-21, and the car shuddered off the line, as it had 2.92's. I changed gear to 3.23, and it helped a lot. What would have been even better is if I had a wide ratio m-20, allowing me to take advantage of a lower first gear.
