Hi there. I live in Scotland near Edinburgh. I’ve got a 71 Riviera which I’ve had for a couple of years now. Got a problem with the ignition barrel. Not sure if this is the right place to ask? I went to start her last week and the barrel didn’t spring back. I thought it might be the barrel but I have a replacement barrel and that’s not this issue as I’ve fitted it and still the same problem! Any ideas. ?
Welcome. Ignition barrel had to look that up... Thats the key lock AKA key cylinder.... I believe the (spring back) is in the ignition switch. Thats a different part connected the key lock.... Others will chime in on just where that part is located. Im not up to par on the column keyed system... BTW Nice sled...
So when I turned the key to engage the starter the key/barrel didn't return to the running position, I had to turn the key back to the running position and then off. After the key wouldn't turn at all so presumed it was the barrel that had broke. I have the steering wheel off and have taken the old barrel out and inserted a new one but it's the same issue. Think it might be something to do with the rod that fits into the end of the barrel....
I think I might need to remove the upper steering column cowl....removed all screws I can see but it won't budge....!
They sell 2 switches one with and one without tilt... bottom of page. http://www.oldbuickparts.com/index.php?cPath=27_354_357
I never knew that! I shall if I can ever get the bleeder started again!! No Alfie’s my cat, the riv is just called riv!
Welcome Joel. Looks like the guys are pointing you in the right direction (as is always the case here). My son spent Spring 2019 at University of Stirling; had a great experience there.
Think I found the problem. Looks like the ignition rod from the sector wheel has snapped. I guess I’ll need a new rod. Problem now is that the car is in park and can’t get it out!
Welcome Joel ! Next time you may get more views and reply's in the bench or sparkys corner. Hope you have it figured out. Tony
