looking for help wiring up a neutral safety switch. the issues im having is, the transmission is a Tremec TKO, it has 2 wires on the back of the transmission, i believe they are both negative and when the circuit is complete, the tranny is in neutral??? attached is a picture of the wire that comes off the back of my clutch pedal. i do have a NSS switch on the end of my steering colum but there are no wires going to it.

The neutral safety switch works off the clutch pedal most years that had one. My 71 4-speed will not start unless the clutch is pressed in. Pressing the pedal completes the circuit for the starter solenoid and is a pretty good sized wire. Are those purplish wires? They look like they are for the column mounted automatic neutral/reverse light switch.

To use this switch, you'll have to remove the terminals from the plug or make a jumper wire with free lugs.

    Here's the switch from Stage1Restoration.com.

This is the bracket that goes on the clutch pedal to trip it on and off.

yes they are purple wires, they go to a plastic switch on the back of the clutch pedal

So, doesn't look like the ones posted? If you hook it up, will it crank without the clutch depressed? You should be able to test with an ohmmeter if you don't have it where you can start it. Should be open circuit with clutch up, closed with clutch down.

thats just it, im not sure how to hook it up

Very simple, all the switch does is connect both purple wires together when the clutch is depressed. With the clutch pedal NOT depressed, whatever switch you use will break the connection between the purple wires, which would not allow the starter solenoid to activate.

im guessing i couldnt just put the ignition wire (that goes to the "s" side of the starter) to one side of purple wire and the other to the starter? thats probably too much current? so i would need a relay, and thats where i get lost, what wire goes where. i found this, tried it but im not sure the where the NSS wires go. to the purple wires on the clutch? or the stock NSS on the steering column. im confused

The TKO wires are a simple open/closed switch. Closed in neutral, open in any gear. I use the pedal clutch switch as my neutral safety but have ran a remote start button through the shifter switch so it would crank the engine if in neutral.

If you have the factory setup, you are over thinking it. If you run a suitably large gauge wire between the terminals of the tw0-wire purple connector, you will be making the circuit that allows the engine to crank. If you pull the jumper, it will not crank. The car doesn't care what transmission you are using and there is no electrical connection to it.

The switch on the clutch pedal is open when the clutch is up and the car will not crank.

If you press the clutch in, the switch closes and the car will crank.

Max Damage I'm working on it!

If you use the factory Clutch pedal based neutral safety switch, you can skip the Tremec thing and leave it unwired.

knucklebusted, do you think i need a relay? is there too much power going to the clutch pedal wires?

Clutch pedal switches should be rated for the current.

Got it figured out, thanks for the help guys, i just cut the ignition wire by the starter and ran both sides to the purple wires on the back of the clutch safety switch and it works! You guys rule! thanks again!
