I'm looking into getting a '70 buick. The color I was aiming for was white. I'm not looking for a show-car, just a nice driver, which I would be willing to put some work into.

I'm from PA and saw this one in TX.

It's a '70 clone GS. He's willing to sell it to me now for $3,000. There is another guy waiting on my response since he wants it as well. Shipping to me is about $800

He gave me quite a few pics of it, which I will post links & what he has to say about the bad parts of it.

Here are the things said about the car:

'The core support is in decent shape. There is some rust on the sides. The battery tray is gone and they have patched the area with fiberglass. It is probably still usable. I looked a little more closely at the passenger floor and their is a couple of rust areas that are weak in about a 2x2 inch area. The driver's side looks fine.'

'Honestly, all fenders and quarters have bondo in them. I'm truly not sure how much rust is in there, but I know that it has been filled to cover for the rust. The car would have to be stripped to determine exactly how extensive it is. I assume that you would probably want to put patch panels on all four corners to make the car right. The trunk looks like it has been patched with some random sheet metal and filler, so you may need to put in a trunk floor.
Until you pull the carpet out (if you choose to do so), only then will you be able to see the condition of the floors. From the bottom, they don't look bad.

I just want to be really honest with you on the condition. I'm not sure what your plans are for the vehicle, so I want you to know as much as possible. I have bought and sold at least a dozen cars on ebay without any problems.'

I need to know your professional opinion on what you think it's worth. I'm really getting tired of just looking and want something to enjoy this summer. I need to let him know by tonight.

    Pics of the BAD areas:

I've been looking for the past few months now, and want to get something to enjoy this summer. Please give me your professional opinion on what it may be worth, and how much work would it need to just be a nice driving car, or do you think this is a rust-bucket?

    Jeff,

My personal opinion (not professional, since I am not paid for this) is that this car is not a good deal for that kind of money. It looks to have bodywork/rust repair needed on most all panels, and that kind of work is expensive. The mechanicals have not been redone, so you aren't buying it for them.

Basically, IMO, you would be paying $3k plus shipping for a decent interior, gs hood, and some usuable parts. I think if you are patient you can find a better deal. I think you are better off paying a little more if necessary to get a lot more car.

I don't remember what Rick (ricknmel) was asking for his 71/72 post car, but I think it was in this price range and seemed a lot better.

Maybe expand your search? This 69 Skylark looks real decent, and right now is under $1,500, in NJ, with less than 1 day to go.

Did you call on that red gs in Colorado for $2k?

I can certainly understand your desire to buy a car now, but I think this one is trouble and you will be buried in it quickly. You won't even be able to drive it, as it will be in the body shop for months before it is a "nice driver".

When somebody just paints over the rust like they did and used a spray can to detail it doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies.

Just my personal opinion, from someone who looks at lots cars, but at most, buys maybe 1 in 100 I see pictures of, and 1 in 25 I see in person.

There are more out there, be patient, but when you find it, act quickly!

Thanks.. Its just frustrating. I can't spend a whole lot because i'm getting married in August.

The red GS was sold already. I called earlier & left a message. When I called back on the answering machine they said it was sold. Guess they got pounded with calls.

Pass on that car. Rust never sleeps. When you get into it the car is going to be a lot worse than it looks and it looks bad now. I would hate to think what the frame and the core supports looks like.

  10. i looked at the pics on ebay as well as the ones on this post and the car isn't even a good cover up car. i bet when you start driving this white one things will fall apart quickly. the man is right patience. i looked and waited for more than ten years before one hit me that felt right and looked fixable. than it took me more than 10 years to get all the parts together and a mishape theft over winter to get me to finally do a frame off on my car. take your time and don't feel rushed and when the right one comes along it will hit you and feel right. and then you will buy it. ; - ):TU: :Comp:

i agree with chris, that trunk floor scares me. any GS i ever saw that needed that much rust repair in the trunk needed rust repairs everywhere. i think if you wait a little longer, you can find something you will like even better. i think you might find something alot better for a little more money, and be happier in the end. maybe something nice will show up at carlisle this weekend.

big risk buying a car with only emailed pics to go by. and that $800 for shipping can be spent on the car instead of the shipping, if you find one locally.

    just my 2 cents, henry

    PATIENCE

They say Patience is a vurtue, with that car Patience would run out fast and your money would too, I say wait there will be something that will get your eye, this was a smart thing to do by coming to the board it looked good from far away but up close NAAAA, I'll keep on the lookout and get back to you Dan.
Really the car is only worth about $1,600 if you can drive it.

Thanks guys.. I'm not going to take that one then. Last night my brother mentioned a '70 GS 350, going for $3300 on ebay. I looked at it around midnight, and was going to buy it this morning, but guess someone else beat me to it :(

I believe it was the one that was advertised in the classifieds for $2k that Chris mentioned. I called Jeff at 11pm telling him to look at it as it had a buy it now of $3300 and it looked to be in decent shape. He told me he'd look at it this morning and I told him it would be sold. You just don't find those deals too often.

I didn't write it down, sorry. Call the person in the ad and try to trace it down to the person who they sold it to. Apparently, the person who sold it on Ebay bought the car to make a couple extra $$$.

I'm almost positive that & the one I called about are two different cars. When I called they told me it was sold, but then a GS from the same state appeared on ebay.

In your web browser, click on the 'history' icon. It'll show you what web sites you hit yesterday. You can bring it up that way. Also I sent you an email about another one.
