    Hi All,
Need a new trans, where is the best place to purchase a new process M-22?
Should I think about the Tremec?

    Hi,

I just got a AutoGear M22W fro Larry at D&L and love it would be nice if it had a Overdrive, but price was right around 2 grand so can't complain

The ratios on this trans are also a little off from the factory and for a wide ratio it is a little nicer that the factory muncie wide ratios

Do some reasearch on what you want, as I know Autogear makes a few different gear set-ups and I have heard some compelling reasons to stay away from certian 5 speed swaps as well

What ever you do make sure you do not base you decisions on price alone as if the trans you get does not hold up to your engine HP and Torque you will not be happy

    Just my 2 cents,
    Jim

i got a richmond "super street" 5 speed, 5th is overdrive. external linkage, shifter is off to the side similar to the m22. Tunnel Mods are required as the hump is too small and the shifter location is back from the original 4 speed location..

    Thanks Guys,
Jim, I was thinking about the M22w, what first gear did you go with?
Some have said the spread between 3rd and 4th makes it a hassle in traffic, 3rd too low 4th a bit too high. I will be keeping the 3.90 rear gear, it is too much fun in town to get rid of.
    Thanks for th input, Adam

Before you make your final decision, visit Keisler's and Richmond's websites, shop around. I did a lot of research before deciding on the 5 speed for my '79 Corvette based on my driving needs and rear gear ratio (tire height also figures in to the equation). It is most desireable to have a 10:1 first gear and to have an overdrive ratio that puts you in a comfortable RPM range for extended cruising. Richmond's web site has a gear ratio calculator that does all the work for you.

    Hey Adam;

You might wanna talk to my freind Ben (69 cutlass) or me before making the decision. We researched it all before he put in the trans thats in there now.

He has an AutoGear M22w in his car first is 2.55 I think but its running a 3.08 rear. Wild cam, does Ok on the street.

with a 3.90 i would HIGHLY recommend looking into an overdrive 5 ot 6 spd from tremec. In the end it costs the same. If you dont wanna hack up your floor, keisler now has no hack model.

Your case is a bit different cuz you already have the trans in there, so youd pretty much ONLY be replacing that. But when converting from auto to manual, if youre considering a new trans just go all out, it costs the same in the end anyway. If youve been eyeing a tremec now is the time!

    Hi again,

I am running the AutoGear Wide Ratio
    2.559 1st, 1.752 2nd, 1.366 3rd 1:1 final

They are space out a little closer than stock wide ratios both the early and later 2.56 1st or 2.52 1st

I am running a 3:55 and enjoy it with 245 60r14 tires not sure the height but usually running aroung 3400 at 70-75 down the highway

if you do 5 speed conversion the one thing that keep me leary of the Keisler was that they are refurbusihed from late model mustangs and believe the factory HP rating on the T-45 were not all that high in the 350 lbs range, they maybe updating the internals, but if you ever have a case issue parts may be limited in the future as I was told that Tremic was not producing this style trans currently as Ford was the orginal buyer

good luck with the decision also I had issues finding a wide ratio from Autogear as they had a supply issue not sure if it got resolved, Larry had a set on his shelf so that is how mine came together

There is another company who is making the low helix gears in wide ratios believe they are out of china or korea either way these are the same as the later muncie ratio 2.52 trans just with a stronger cut gear profile in theory

I went thru 2 stock M-20 1 early and 1 late and did not mind the gear ratios as it was not that big of a change even with my new trans I do alot of 1,3,4 or 1,2,4 gear changes unless I am going for a balls to the wall pass or as someone told me spirited driving experience lol

I am a lucky dog as I have a buddy with a "connection" to get one of the last overdrive gear sets. The company making them is no longer. I got his last set of gears! I imagine they will pop up again someday.

My buddy is building me (damn near at cost) an Auto Gear Super Case M-21-Overdrive :Brow: It's going in the vert. With the 4.11:1 rear gear it is going to be perfect! I put one in my pals GTO 4 speed rag a month ago and it's a bit doggy with the 3.5:1 he has in it now but we are changing his to a 3.9:1 which will be right there for him.

I have an M-20 and the 4.11:1 now which gets right out of the hole scarry fast but highway cruising is 60mph @3K rpm which is not fun for any long cruising. I am excited to make this change.

Here's a little table to compare the transmission gearing of the M-20, M-21 and the New Design M-21 to the final drive gears with a few different common rear differential gears

    Rear Gear 3.9 9.83 7.33 5.69 3.9 12.13
    Rear Gear 3.5 8.82 6.58 5.11 3.5 10.89

    Factory M-21 1st Gear 2nd Gear 3rd Gear 4th Gear Reverse
    Factory M-21 2.20 1.64 1.28 1.00 2.27
    Rear Gear 4.11 9.04 6.74 5.26 4.11 9.33
