Acquired a brake booster for my 71 buick skylark. It is an original equipment booster for my car although my car has not had booster previously. The booster is used but works fine. It is for all drum brakes which my car has. My question is how do I install it. In other words, can I just unbolt my master cylinder from the firewall, install booster in its place and connect to pedal, then attach master cylinder to booster and hook up vacuum line to intake? Or do I have to install other rods and such to make this work? Thanks.

Do you have the mounting studs (4) on the firewall? I think the manual brakes use a different rod and clevis or it mounts differently to the brake pedal. There is also a pin that goes into the power booster. That pin comes in different lengths depending on the master cylinder used. I don't think the manual master cylinder and the power brake master are the same.

Booster will set at an angle rather than horizontal, uses 4-1/2" studs on the firewall. Two previously used by the master cylinder & two below it. The clevice from the booster attaches to the lower of two existing holes thru the brake pedal arm, up under the dash. You may need to adjust the stop light switch at the brake pedal arm. Booster is common to drum or disc cars, the master cylinder will change between applications.
Get someone familiar with brakes to verify you are using the right pushrod between the master & the booster. Take the time & get this part looked at by someone who knows brakes.

Would the rod you are referring to be the part that sticks out the front of the booster when I push in the rod from the back of booster? If so, it sticks out about an inch. Does this sound right? Thanks. Also where would I get different rods?

That's the rod you need. All A-body Buicks from '67-72 used the same piece with power brakes. GM # 5462683. I expect any brake shop would be able to locate one for you.
