I am having trouble keeping it running. i have put a new rochester carb and I put an electric fuel pump and not the in tank one with a fuel presure regulator. the car is getting gas. it will run for maybe 50,60 seconds and stops, then it is really hard for it to start again. I was thinking it might have something to do with the timing. does the gas tank have to be presurized for the fuel pump to work properly? There are 2 holes on the original fuel pump housing, do they have to be sealed? I have the new fuel pump conneted to that housing line.

What fuel pressure are you running? If it's excessive, you may be pushing the carb's inlet needle off the seat, flooding the engine and making it hard to restart.

I set it at 4 and then 5

using one of those "dial a pressure" jobs for a regulator?

yep, im using the dial regulator, should i get rid of it?

I've never liked them, but more importantly we need to know your pressure measured with a gauge rather than relying on the mark on the regulator.

How long do you have to wait for it to start and run for another 50-60 seconds?
Just thinking maybe crap in the gas tank could be clogging the inlet sock filter in the tank.

ok I diconected the fuel pump and tried the old school way by spraying starting fluid directly into the carb.
it ran for about 50, 60 seconds and shut off, so im thinking its not a fuel problem. its like when it warms something makes it shut down. i have new carb, distributor about a year old. im going to change the points and see what that does they look a little burnt

We're not talking about too little fuel, but too much. What's your fuel pressure reading? Get one possibility out of the way before moving on to the next.

You may be on track with the clogged strainer in the tank. My F 250 had a sim. problem that no one could figure out till I dropped the tank and found a clogged pick up. (alittle off subject I know but relevent) Truck would run 22.5 miles and shut off. it would sit 15 mins - 1/2 hour and run another 22 miles. the crap would fall off the pick up when not running and then get sucked back up again. Just a thought.

I was at the shop thats doing my Flowmaster exaust system today and they were working on a motor that was doing exactly the same thing as your describing. new carb, fuel pump filters ect. After dinkin with it for an hour they pulled the carb off and found a piece of trash in the seat holding it mostly closed. something to look at.

Ok I pulled the plugs this weekend and found 2 spark plugs wet, smelled like gas and the rest of them were black. could the engine be going bad?
Is there something I can do next?

Sounds like you have an ignition problem and some of the plugs are not firing (the wet ones), and the other plugs are fouling due to flooding when you try to get it to run. Get 8 new plugs, install them and use a timing light to make sure each one is getting spark. You can also check for spark before you put the plug in the engine if you have no timing light. Most likely you have a cracked distributer cap or worn out rotor or maybe a few bad plug wires.
