Not for nothing, but the 401 should be 325 hp stock, so right in the middle of the 396 hp range. But, isn't our nailhead lighter than a BBC? And by more than 100 lbs??? :Do No:

LOL I was once again talking to this guy at work about my nailhead first off he's never heard of these engines and he doesnt belive that this engine puts out the power it does. He asked me what the bore and stroke are to which I had no answer. What is the bore and stroke for a stock 1961 401? Why does it put out the power it does with such small valves? Are there any bad things to say about them as far throwing barrings or other parts that regularly fail? I want to be well informed so I can finally sut him up and his big block? Are NH considered wide blocks?

My 65 GS 401 with power steering and A/C, ran 14.60's with the original virgin engine and over 90,000 miles untouched.
I just added a TH400 trans and 3.55 posi, good mufflers and sticky rubber recapped tires.
No headers; and the little 500 cfm AFB carter carb and stock aircleaner on it.
Some 401's ran mid 12's with cam, headers, Q-jet, 3.90 gears and slicks, if I remember correctly.
I loved that car, but the X wife totaled it.

I am with Alex,,,, let him keep talking.....:Brow: :Brow: to answer your question,,,the bore is 4.1875 and the stroke is 3.640 for a 401....the 425 is the same stroke with a bore of 4.3125.....yep,,, let that poor, ignorant fool keep talking.....
The only 2 weak areas of a nailhead is this,,,, the harmonic balancer will crack in the key way if the crank snout bolt is not tight enough and with enough age and mileage the factory cast pistons will break....
The engine is a torque engine , not a rpm engine,,,the torque for a 401 is 445 ft. lbs. at 2800 rpm and 465 ft.lb. at 2800 for a 425,,,,,, chebby guys think that unless a engine will go 8000 or more that it wont run... let him keep talkin....:Brow: :Brow:
