Hi, just wondering if there are any mechanics/hobbyist in the Rockford IL or Ogle, Dekalb county, Boone Cty that could help me:

A leak has developed on the right side of my Diff. I'm sure it's just a seal, but don't know how to fix!? This is a 1972 Buick GS Stg1 (not riv)

    Thanks in Advance, Mike

If it is just an axle seal, you can easily pull the axle out. The rear in your car is an 8.5 10 bolt, and the axles are held in by a plate with 4 bolts. Remove them and the axle comes out. Take it a machine shop and have them replace the seal. Should be a 712146.

C & A Auto Service in Machesney Park: (815) 636-8459. He'll be done with my Riv in a few days. Or you can go to Campbell's Automotive in Loves Park: (815) 877-2266. I use them both.

Make sure the machine shop installs the new bearing on the right direction.I have done some repairs on axles that have had such work done,& have found them installed backwards. There are simple directions inside the bearing box.The "rib" faces out.
    The bearing # is SET-9 or A-9
The seal is # 712146 or 2146. Most brands are just making one seal now,& labeling it the 2146. The 712146 is slightly wider/thicker.

If your rear has a crush sleeve on the pinion gear, then i DONT recommend changing the pinion seal because the pinion clearance will be effected and you might burn up the rear. I have seen this happen many times. Either leave it alone or have the whole rear taken apart by a qualified individual who can reset the clearances.

Thanks for all the good info. It turns out my axle vent was missing! I'm not a mechanic, and never knew I had an axle vent. Couldn't even find mention of it in the 1972 Buick Service manual. Anyway, all is good now. Thanks Again!

    "I'm glad it's fixed!
I may have the same problem.
Mine has been making noise since my rear pinion seal was replaced.
Ever since then. Someone mentioned it may be the crush sleeve ? There is a measurement for this?

Nick, Here's that song, Circa "1971" same as my car.
    Remember it well.
The song is entitled Highway Star by "Deep purple"
You may be to young to remember.....lol
Those were the days of eight track, doobers, and parking w/ chicks on the mountain.
There was no such thing as MADD back then.
