I'm in the process of taking apart the top end of my 300 2bbl, and I cannot get the darn intake manifold off. I sprayed and let it sit, I pried with a screw driver. What else could I do to break this thing loose?
You need a very large flat head screwdriver or crowbar to pry up on the outer edge of the intake and have at it! Good luck
I usually stick the top half of my floor jack handle in one of the carb holes and gently put pressure on it till it pops loose. People are going to freak out on me, now, telling me it's going to break the intake to pieces. I've done it a dozen times.
>>I had this problem with my 350 4bbl intake manifold after first installing it and having a grommit fall through the intake and under the pan valley. I used the back end of a claw hammer to gently pry up the outer edges of the intake by slipping it under the exposed manifold pan - then I was able to lift it out by hand.
OK I got it off after work, now a bunch of the old gasket and debris fell into the cam valley (or whatever that part of the motor is called where you see the cam) What do I do to get that crap out. Do I need to pull out the cam and everything. Thanks
Thats it. I dont need to try to flush it out or anything. Do I wait till I have the motor put back together and run it then change the oil? Im going to be putting the poston 110a cam in if that changes anything. :edit: sorry if that sounds dumb but ive never been inside the motor before. Ive only done bolt-ons.
doesnt sound dumb at all. gotta learn along the way. Get out as much stuff as possible and put everything back on. start it and make sure you did everything correct and its all working and then change the oil.
I would be changing the oil BEFORE you start the motor. Chances are, you got some coolant in the oil when you popped the intake loose.
Try to rinse the debris you can't vac out. We use a quart of oil...kinda pour oil over any areas that got debris on them...it should carry any remaining debris into the oil pan where you can drain it out. It helps to have the oil plug out when you do this. Don't use carb or brake cleaner...it will ruin your bearings. Use engine oil only.
thats right your changing the cam too. are you changing lifters with the new cam? hope so. vacuum out most of it, before doing anything. Next pop the valve covers, unbolt the bar holding the ROCKERS on, this will allow all the push rods to fall out. the push rods should go in the same spot so label them or store them in a way they came out. remove the lifters (if reusing and I hope not) and the cam should be ready to be removed (since you'll be reusing the cam bearings inspect these and be careful removing the old cam). apply some assy lube to the brgs. oh be sure to degree the cam upon reinstall. and be very careful putting the new cam in.
believe me I will be very careful since ive never done this before. oh ya when I got the intake off and inspected it, I found that three of the ports were completley blocked off with black build up. Makes me wonder how the thing even ran like that. Thanks again.
Oh crap its a 300. Im not sure if those lifters will work. I bought these for my 350. Does anyone know if these lifters will work for his 300?
