My buddies 455 will not stay running in gear with Edelbrock 1413 Performer carb

My buddy just had his 455 rebuilt by JW. It has the same TA 113 cam in it as before the rebuild. The engine spun a bearing and ran fine before the rebuild however the carb, Edelbrock Performer 800, 1413 sat for one year. The car was dyno'd with this carb and it also had trouble running at idle however after a few pulls it seemed to idle better. We installed the engine in his 72 GS with turbo 400, 2,500 stall. The engine idles fine at 900 rpms however it kills as soon as it is put into gear. the timing is at 34 all in, the vacuum advance works.
The idle mixture screws make no difference as I believe that the idle setting is too high therefore the throttle plates are slightly open so the idle circuit is being bypassed. We blew compressed air into the idle circuit and it seemd to help.

We checked for vacuum leaks and there doesn't seem to be any.

What else can we look for?

    Thanks

Are you saying that the distributor is locked out and timing is 34*, or that the total timing when all in is 34*? If not locked out, what is the ignition timing when idling?

Larry, I will have to check. Jim set the timing on the dyno.

The total timing is 34. I am not sure of the initial timing.
