I have found this transmission in town. Is this muncie the correct one that I'd be looking for? I thought I needed a side loader? I'm sure this has been asked before, but having trouble finding anything.

    Thanks guys...

That is a SM465 Muncie for trucks. Thats known as the granny gear 4 speed. You dont want that.

    Go for it!!!

You would launch like John Force...

For about the first 10 feet:laugh:

But yeah, that's a granny/bull gear truck tranny.

Ok with that gear, id say if your dead set on a Muncie than an M-21 or m-22, is what would work best.

Well I was kinda looking for the np a833 but I will consider any manual I can get a hold of. Options are quite limited over here.

You could put a Saginaw 4spd in for now.

They are FAR more common and FAR cheaper than Muncie 4spds.

Saggies can be had for under $200:Brow:

Saginaw and Muncie 4spds directly interchange, so you could do the 4spd conversion, enjoy the gear-jamming, then when you find a Muncie, swap it in:3gears:

FWIW, a Saginaw could be all the trans you need.

They are pretty tuff trannies really.

Just remember, with your gears youll need a close-ratio trans...

    With 373s and a wide-ratio trans, 1st will feel like granny-gear:eek2:

But the gear ratio on a Saginaw is super easy to figure out...

You just count the grooves/rings around the input shaft:Smarty:

    Grooves- 1st 2nd 3rd 4th
    0-------- 2.85 2.02 1.35 1.00

    1-------- 2.56 1.81 1.37 1.00

    1-------- 2.56 1.81 1.44 1.00

    2-------- 3.11 2.20 1.47 1.00

    3-------- 3.50 2.48 1.65 1.00

With your gears, youll want 2 or 3 grooves:TU:

Remember that with the Gm style 833, 4th gear is overdrive, which is nice, but you essentially only have a 3 speed with overdrive. First gear in those is quite low, and in my opinion way too low for your rear gear ratio. I have heard myself that the Saginaw 4 speeds are complete junk, and dont handle much of any kind of power. The Saginaw 3 speeds are quite strong. I have used the 3 speeds. Best bet is to find an m-21.

That's always the story, but hardly the truth.

Ive beat on them and have seen them beat on and they are plenty strong for a mild small-block.

In fact, a friend was running one behind a built 400-sbc with a 200 shot of nitrous into the low 6s in the 1/8:shock:

He only pulled it for an auto to bracket race.

What kills Saggies is beating on them in reverse:Smarty:

The case isn't very strong where the reverse slider gear is and busting a$$ backwards will damage them.

But like I said, the Saginaw will get you started for cheap and you can swap in a Muncie/B-W 4spd in when you find one.

Ok, I think I might've found a Saginaw 4 speed in town. Will try to go take a look at it this week. One more question along with the saginaw is that I have seen tales of converting the OD from a saginaw 3 speed to the Saginaw 4 speed. Does anybody have any further information on this. I don't really understand, does it remove 4th and replace with and OD gear or is it "switched on" then all 4 gears are at a lower rate? If that's the case can I "Switch" it on at any time? If I could get my hands on both, I would definitely consider that conversion and then begin getting the rest of my parts list together.

    Thanks again guys...

Ive never heard of an OD Saginaw:Do No:

The only 3+OD/4spd hybrid Ive ever heard of in a GM is a New Process A833.

And that was borrowed from Dodge, who were really into the 3+OD thing for a while...

There was a weird a$$ Borg-Warner T-10 with a small auto trans on the back of it that could be ''switched on''

Is that what youre thinking of?

That is what I found when I was looking around for an od conversion/addition for the Saginaw. I've found a few posts that did this swap. Apparently there was a write up in the April 75 hot rod magazine how to do this.

    Not worth it?

    Sounds interesting...

But I suspect it was made of a very rare alloy:Smarty:

Some parts are cast out of only the purest Unobtainium and this OD unit is probably one of them:Dou:

I for one think the Germans have it right about OD.

Most German transmissions even with 6+gears have a final-drive-ratio of 1 to 1.

They feel that OD is nothing but a crutch for poor gear selection:Smarty:

If you want an OD, swap your 373s for 323s and buy a 1-groove Saginaw...

Itll amount to pretty much the same thing:Comp:

That's what i figured. Its just an in town car, so the 1:1 is fine with me, just thought I'd look into it, bored at work, haha.

So, if I could get a "working" Saginaw 3 ring for $100 I should jump on it? Then I could begin with the rest of the corresponding parts....

    I would.

The Saginaw will get you mowing gears on the cheap:3gears:

And like I said, you can upgrade to a B-W or a Muncie later, because all three are easily interchangeable.
