Just got my 3 year project car running today and took it for a run out the drive way. When I bought the car the drive line was out of the car.
A few years back when I was doing the engine and transmission I had the flywheel re-surfaced but put the originall clutch in that came with the car not knowning the condition I thought i would try it out.
Anyways today when I start to let out the clutch it really shakes(hammer) the car untill the clutch is fully out.
Would this be a bad clutch or another issue?

    Thanks,

    Dan

Are you sure the throwout bearing isn't installed backwards? I've seen that done before. Broke in 4 pieces.

I tore stuff down tonight and the throwout bearing was installed the correct way. However I got a photo of the clutch and there are some major heat spots. Would this cause real jerking from a get go?

I'm not an expert on manual trans. setups but that pressure plate surface looks glazed, rusted and like crud. Personally I would get a new one and a new clutch and go from there. They're not that expensive.

That pressure plate is smoked. Get a new complete clutch and life will be good:3gears:

I used a Centerforce in my 68 and love it, smooth and effortless pedal :TU:

That pressure plate is toast. The rust spots are going to make for huge chatter. The pressure plate should be shiny and smooth as a baby's butt.

btw, if the throw out bearing is installed backwards, the clutch won't work at all. Been there, done that, under the car in the dark, pulling the trans twice.

i know im gonna get flack for this...BUT...id buy a lifetime clutch set from autozone..i have a buddy that hauls concrete forms in 3, 1 ton trucks..all he uses, he used to eat 3 clutches per year per truck, now one every 18 months....when he wears them out..down to the ZONE a gets a new one..no questions no hassles...

my buddy that puts the clutches in for him bought the same brand set for his SS396 chevelle..says it blows his centerforce away...hes a car junkie, and a good mechanic...next car i do, im going to use the zones lifetime...

i have been known to bitch about the zone..but im gonna try it...

This one held a bit. Not by much. My friend did the trans install. I rebuilt the engine and fired the engine up to break it in and heard rattling and a few pops. After the break-in he pushed the clutch pedal in about 10 times and it let go. The car was never on the ground. Installed new bearing and it's been fine ever since.

I bought one from O'riely's, it's a lifetime & was 40.00 cheaper than the zone. It includes everything & has been in my car for almost 3 yr's now. :3gears: :TU:

Make sure your hands are not dirty when you touch the flywheel.

Also replaced the pressure plate & throwout bearing. I cleaned up the flywheel surface with brake cleaner before installing the clutch. Hope thats alright.

Getting the grease off is a big deal, but if you have blue spots, you may still have to get the flywheel ground as well to get a chatter-free engagement.
