I am looking to add a 4 speed to one of the cars, starting from scratch here, so any help on parts would be great. I had an m20 that came in a parts batch from another car, on the shelf waiting for the right time. Took it to the transmission shop to get serviced, he called and suggested adding it to the scrap pile. So with that in mind, I am looking to find all the parts to do a conversion. So far I have a bell housing, and 65 lbs of scrap metal. Any assistance will be appreciated Mark
I would stay away from the M-21 and 22 if it was me. I hate the tall first gear (2.20). The M-20 has a better first (2.56).
Mark- that was the original one to THAT CAR!!! Remember the pics and description I sent you?!?!?uzzled:
Aluminum can be welded and repaired..I would find someone that welds aluminum and get it done right, especially if the case is original to the car..
Tranny guy didn't want to work on it, most likely. Have met "technicians" like that here - they don't want to deal with old stuff. Have some empty cases and spare parts if you wind up needing anything.
By the time you get done welding the case back together and rebuilding it, what are you going to be into it for? Probably double or triple what you can buy a good used Muncie for.
The trans is the easy part. You need a flywheel, pedals "Z" bar and all that stuff. What kind of car is this going in?
You can buy a "new" or "improved" Muncie 4 speed from these guys. http://www.5speeds.com/newm22.html Or you can take your parts and put them into one of the Super cases that they sell. I am very happy with the case and gears that I have bought from them.
What rear ratio are you running. If you keep your automatic rear 2.73 or 2.56 even a 2.56 first gear may not be enough first gear. You may want to consider s Saginaw with a 3.11 first gear. There's a Muncie case on Ebay for $149. You need to pay attention to the size of the cluster gear shaft. The older ones are 7/8' and the newer ones are 1".
