HELLO FIRST OF ALL GET DUAL PIPES FROm engine back. ive got turbo 2 muffles on my Electra 2 1/4 inch pipes and they rumble some at idle and when you go they have the cool blubblub sound. also make sure your tail pipe sticks out the right length so the gasses don't hang around the rear bumper if you want the stock sound get regular mufflers here some board members cars http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlU3DpXntMk
I agree with Jim , Another idea for quiet if you want to sound factory try Midas mufflers with the lifetime guarantee . I have Midas on a T bird and they just love this car when I bring it in for a free muffler ! Or if you want a sweet sound that won't make your car sound too loud but a nice mellow sound Dyna max is what you may want . :TU: :TU:
I agree with running duals from the manifolds back. These cars don't breathe very well through a single 2 1/4" pipe. That's actually on my list of things to do this spring when I bring my '71 out of storage. I recommend a pair of Flowmaster 50 series "big block" or 70 series "big block II" mufflers. You'll still get a mild rumble from them, but nothing too annoying to where you will have to worry about pissing off your neighbors. http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/index.php?cat=1 I had a 70 series on my '96 GMC for a while. It came with the American Thunder system I bought for it. I was actually upset with how quiet it was but that's just me. I like making noise :3gears:
My 68 had true duals from the factory,,, got a real nice sound when I deleted the 2 rear resonators.... the factory stock mufflers had a low growl at idle and on up thru the rpm range... not loud at all... the ''muscle car'' sound...... Go with a long, stock type muffler like the chrysler hemi muffler for 1968 and continue with the rear tail pipes being the same size as the front head pipes....
my 70 electra has 2 1/4 duals thru magnaflows out dynomax tube resonators though for more quiet i recommend dynomax super turbo thru tube ressonators..........but im putting on shorty headers next year when my wife isnt looking....marty
Ditto on Midas....you can't go wrong with the life time guarantee! Really too quiet for my taste.
Hello, I asked the muffler shop that was replacing my exhaust to put in an X pipe. They did a nice job on the exhaust but neglected to install the X. I was able to drive the car without the X for a couple of days and then with the X. No other changes were made. The difference in sound was very noticeable. My engine has a mild cam in it. Without the X the sound was syncopated like an idling Harley. It was not loud but you could hear the cam. After the X the sound was a little quieter but much smoother. To me it sounded a bit more refined. It sounded like the engine was running smoother. The engine ran the same but the sound was, to me, more Buick and less Harley. In normal driving I couldn't feel a difference in performance with and without the X. But, I like the sound much better with the X in place. John
