guys; i know that there have been several threads concerning performance exhaust systems , on this site , in the past . i have a 72 gs 350 , 2 1/4" exhaust system . the manifold exhaust pipe look almost new & i will retain them . the cheap mufflers (midas) were damaged , but still functinal , by the previous owner . the tailpipes , i just removed & garbaged . what i have to do is to replace these mufflers . i will have tailpipes mandrel bent . i am not into noise , as the motor is stock and i do not race the car . i want a muffler that has a nice mellow sound at idle & cruising , but some vroom at acceleration . i exclude flowmasters , from experience , as too noisy . i am considering super turbo dynomax & ravin' . any suggestions & experiences will be greatly appreciated . tkx .
I would check out Rhino Performance mufflers. I was running a Flowmaster 2 1/2 inch setup w/Rhino mufflers on my 350 w/ Poston headers. It gives it a nice throaty sound, not too loud at cruise but at WOT it really screams. With manifolds I bet it would be fairly quiet and have a nice sound. You don't usually hear too much about Rhinos, I don't know how they compare power-wise to dynomax mufflers, but they do give the car a very distinct sound which is what I like about them.
I am a big fan of the dynomax super turbos....nice, mellow sound while at idle, but gives you the performance sound while stomping on it. I have the short case mufflers, but I hear the long case mufflers sound a bit better.
We have discussed this many times. Dynomax 17749 By Walker from Summit $42.99 with an x pipe are the quietest with the best performance we have seen tested head to head. We posted the test results which was on a 455 Pontiac. Not all brands were included but many were. Many like the Dr GAS x pipe because it is reinforced with a plate.
